4 player joystick angle, I'm in trouble... Again
« on: September 10, 2014, 09:50:54 pm »
Hello everyone, first of all I'd like to thank the community for all the info and how helpful you guys have been
As I've said before this is my first project, and little did I know how much more trouble I'd have to go to make my MAME cabinet for 4 players instead of 2 (what can I say, when I saw the NBA JAM cabinet, i pictured my self playing with a bunch of friends and bought it)

So on to the issue

When I first started trying to figure out my CP layout I didn't even think the angle of the joystick could be an issue, I just took the templates from slagcoin and started from there, I didn't even think of the fact that there where no 4 player games that used so many buttons so I ended up with this:

Then I asked for suggestions on button mapping and got that figured out, but everyone made it clear that even though my buttons were angled I shouldn't angle the Joysticks.
But today my joysticks and buttons arrived (thanks to divemaster127) and my biggest fear came true, the joystick base doesn't fit in a straight position on players 2 (main player) and 4!!

Any suggestions?
I don't want to have to make the board again, it wasn't easy nor cheap getting this one made with the NBA JAM sticker on and the clear plastic protector
is breaking/cutting  the base of the joystick my only option? I'm in Mexico and they are not easy to replace if I mess them up
are angled joysticks thaaaat bad?

here's a picture of my cabinet

Thank you!

Is it too late to ditch two buttons each for the outside players?  Not much call for 4-player Street Fighter.  Probably not.... I see you already cut artwork.

Would it work if you unscrewed the offending nuts, placed the joystick and the screwed it OVER the plate?  Or maybe file away some of the joystick base?

Yeah I was going to suggest cutting the corner of the base off and drill two additional holes for screws on either side of it for additional strength.

Yep - just grind off the corner of the joystick base.  There's another project on here recently that had to do that to make things fit.

Yup, use a Dremel to lop off the corner.  It should work fine with only 3 screws.

Malenko had the same issue and solved it by doing just that:  http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,140777.msg1458291.html#msg1458291
