Just bought a Cabinet.... now what?
« on: August 28, 2014, 07:59:26 pm »
Thanks to those who have helped me on my previous thread.  As an update, I ended up finding a nice cabinet for sale locally and decided to pull the trigger.  It looks to be in very good shape and was only $40, so there isn't much downside.

The issue is that there are a few things that were included that I'm not familiar with (the guy's wife was the one who sold it to me, so she wasn't very familiar with it).  I've posted some pictures and could use some insight on the following:

1)  In the first two pictures, you can see that he's got some metal thing in there -- presumably where the control panel went?  There's been something added to both sides (3rd picture) that I don't know what the purpose is... I'm inclined to pull all of that out, but don't want to if it'll be useful to me (I really regret taking choir instead of shop in 7th grade!).  Does anyone even know what it's for?

2)  I was initially going to make a 4 player cab, but I'll heed the advice of the masses and make a 2 player for now.  I think that'll speed up my completion by quite a bit, and then I can work on a 4 player at my leisure if I'm still craving it.

3)  In the 4th picture, there's some black screen thing.  It looks almost the size of the control panel, but I'm not sure what it'd be used for.  It's metal and mesh looking.

4)  Finally, I didn't get a key for the back of the cabinet!  Ugh!  I'm guessing I'll have to drill it out and replace it with a new one?  Do they sell 'generic' keys to these sorts of locks?  I can't imagine every $2 cabinet lock has a unique key, but I'm not sure.

Thanks for any advice!  Time to get started.....

Search a30 lock or see if the replacement lock you buy is an a30.   Because if the a30 lock key doesn't match you'll need to drill that lock out anyway.

Not sure about the other points.  Congrats on the new cab!

To answer a few of your questionss, those things you say were added in(3rd pic) looks like the control panel clamps, dont remove them unless you want you control panel to be all loose and shaky, the metal mesh grill looks like its supposed to sit on the control panel, dont know how the previous guy used it and you probably wont need it but set it aside it looks like t could be used for speaker grills or something,as for the lock, try to get an a30 key,if not you dont have to drill out anything if you can access the back of it,remove the screw holding the arm to the lock, remove arm and unscrew the lock from the cab, simple no drilling required.

The grate is for the speaker grill.  The Virtua Striker cab I have is like that.  Instead of separate grills for the speakers it has one large panel with the ends curved/angled to be pretty.

Are you talking about the control panel latch?

Pick or drill it to replace it.

Thanks for all the insight -- that helps.  I'll run to the hardware store this evening and see if I can find a replacement key.  Otherwise I think I can access it from the front of the cab.
