starting out reseach for my next project
« on: August 20, 2014, 11:22:45 am »
so i'm starting out my research on my next project after the mame cabinet ..
(the wife doesn't allow me to just build another cabinet so need to change things up a little bit..)
thought about making a jukebox...
something in the general design of this >
http://www.popten.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/05/jukebox.jpeg
ambitions i know...

the thing is the tubes on the side... i guess they are made from semi transparent colored glass .. and running in them are just normal light bolbs...
how do you recon i would be able to replicate something like that ?
i don't know of any material that will allow me to do something like this .. and still be semi transparent.. (unless offcures i'll use the correct glass a thing that will cost me a small fortune and be as brittle as hell..)

and also the metal tubes in the middle, would that mean i'll need to start cutting and manipulating aluminum ? because that's sucks... i don't have the materials for that...

offcures i'll use a touchscreen and a computer inside... but  i think it's really almost impossible to do something like that...

what do you guys think ?

Nothings impossible  I mean somebody made that right? But to replicate that will be extremely hard with out the proper resources.
The easiest thing to do would be to use that as a reference and run led strips around it. Or find a real one and convert it.

Someone from Columbia built one like that, but he used all the original parts for the ornate part of the structure, if I'm not mistaken.

Edit: See here (I out-Scotted Scott!) http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,113484.msg1205403.html#msg1205403

I went wall-mount for mine. Much easier to build.

I cheated and found an old touch tunes box on craigslist for $75.  Routered some wood so I could fit a wide screen in it, painted it, added a lower monitor, etc.  Also, added my own leds that change color based on the music.  You might keep an eye out for one to restore or modify.  Building from scratch would take some major skills.  Maybe have $700 in it, but I love watching old 80's hair band music videos on it while sipping vodka or beers.

That's not going to be a cheap project, and possibly a divorce from the sound of it.... But if you got the fever Who is Jenn to judge???
