The box should display the AIT logo very prominently and all their cards are packaged in black/red/gray color themes with various monsters/gargoyles on the front depending on the card model.

They're just up the road, I could go ask em  ;)  Coincidence, but I got my fist good look at the ATI building for the first time on Sunday.  Nice looking building.  Had a big heat sink on top if I recall correctly  ;D

He is asking about the "Built By" and the "Powered By" because ATI licenses their technology out to some other lesser companies and they stick the Powered By stickers on there.  The Built By ones are better.

btw, Sapphires build the true ATI ones.  I have one and its great (9500 -> 9700).  The TV out is the same chip as all the ATI's and I know the quality is there with ATI (since they are from the same line).

I don't know if this is the case for all of them thought.  I just ordered a 700 from CnetPC.com (found from pricewatch.com).  It was the cheapest I found.  I'll let you know how it goes (should be here today).

www.pricewatch.com

Do a search for "built by ati" under videocards.

Pricewatch is THE place to "price shop" for computer components!

btw, the one I got SUCKS!

It was powered by ATI (even thought their website said "ATI Radeon... specs... (and in the middle of the specs wrote the company name).

It doesn't have SVid but composite... and I got it for a project that is basically TV-out only to a TV I spent extra for SVid!..

sigh... and the shipping is about 1/4 the price of the card...

Friends recommended www.newegg.com and www.mwave.com to me because they'd never had a bad experience with them, ever.  I've shopped quite a bit there since, and I haven't either.  They're usually among the top six or seven companies in Pricewatch searches too.  It looks like mwave.com even does a lot of business with large corporations, because you can order things like external RAID enclosures from them.  I don't think they'd rip you off.  I've gotten two ATI Radeon all-in-wonder cards from them, and they're both awesome - all the inputs and outputs, packaged software, everything all good.  (can't remember which atm - either both from newegg or both from  mwave.)

*EDIT*  Lol, figures...  I'm cleaning my rec room and just ran across the receipt.  It was mwave.com I got the ATI cards from.

To make sure I get a built by ATI card, I either buy one from someplace like bestbuy.  When you go there, you can pick up the box and look at it to make sure it is in fact BUILT BY ATI.
Another place I've gone is actually ati.com
You can buy directly from them via their web store.

I'm pretty much on the same boat.  Trying to find a cheap card with TV-out until I buy a computer monitor and the ArcadeVGA.
I was wondering if anyone has experience or insight about the TV-out feature of the Saphire RADEON 7000 64MB DDR DVI/CRT/TV PCI.
I would buy an actual ATI but their cheapest PCI is the AIW Radeon VE at $100.

Any opinions?

Well, I ended up getting one off of Ebay.  I paid a little too much, but I was sick of looking.  $45 after shipping.

We'll have to wait and see what it's like when it gets here I guess.

pricegrabber.com has a nice comparison too. I used to be a pricewatch guy...but pricegrabber has some cool features that pricewatch doesn't...though pricewatch has done some nice things in the past couple of months.

I usually go to pricewatch to see how the different classes of CPU, MEM, etc compare to each other, then go to pricegrabber to look for the best prices. This was before pricewatch started calculating the shipping though...

FWIW, I have a Sapphire Radeon 7000 64MB AGP and the TV-out looks great!  I'm using the S-video.  I haven't tried the composite yet.

Good.  I have no reason to suspect PCI would be any different as long as it has the same chip. Thanks for that info.

It won't be the graphics processor that matters, it will be the DAC that puts out to the s-video jack.  I've noticed a big difference in the quality of those too...  I tried a friend's laptop and my arcade machine PC side-by-side on my TV through the same S-Video cable, and the laptop's s-vid connector was really fuzzy while the arcade machine's was crisp and had readable text in Notepad all the way up to 1024x768 resolution on the PC.  (the arcade machine has a Radeon AIW card in it.)

My .02 cents you dont really need to buy from ATI just a decent company using the ati chipset.  Ala ASUS Saphire Hercules PNY and another half dozen more I could think off.  Usually you can get them cheaper or faster from 3rd parties than actual ATI stuff.  Its just like your mobo if you get intel you usually want the intel chipset but you usually dont get the official intel one you get ASUS ABIT or MSI because they are cheaper and a little faster.
