Rave Racer Help
« on: August 03, 2014, 03:47:04 am »
I have a Rave Racer DX cabinet (the single player one) and I also have the System 22 board-set. The issue is that the board-set that I have is from the dual cabinet version which means no 6-speed shifter, just the up and down one.

I've played around with the Roms in MAME to see if there is a different rom set for the DX versus dual cabinet but haven't had any luck. Just wondering if someone knows how to make the System 22 boardset become a DX cabinet type?

As far as I am aware Ridge Racer 1/2 and Rave Racer are the same boards just different ROMs I guess you could just burn the single player roms and pop them in and see if that works but don't 100% me on that. ::)

I wasn't even aware that there was a single cab-deluxe version of Rave Racer with a 6-speed shifter. I thought that all RR1 machines had the 6-speed and all RR2 and Rave Racer cabs had the up-down shifter.

Do you have pics of your machine I'd love to see what a Rave Racer DX cab looks like; I've never seen one!

Looking at the MAME Rom list I'm not seeing separate Roms so this might be something that's simply set in the service menu.

I don't have an answer, but I'm curious as to if this machine is one of the super rare ones that has force feedback on the steering?

Yep - same board set. I've had to swap roms around to fix a GFX fault. Not sure what ROM set to burn is the issue. MAME doesn't seem to differentiate between the different cabinet types and only does it by region.

Mine is just a conversion cab unfortunately - specifically a Ridge Racer which has been upgraded at some point in its life. Here is a picture of the one you are talking about;

 I have seen one in the flesh, in Abu Dhabi of all places!

There are technically four versions of Rave Racer - the DX, DX50, Twin and Single.

Nothing in the service menu unfortunately. I've gone through the menus both in MAME and on the real hardware. It appears that MAME has a menu to set a flag at a memory address to change the cabinet type. Looks like the memory address is in RAM and is set on startup. If someone can help me decipher the source code for the System 22 driver then that would also help.

if it's in the MAME dip-switch menu then it's probably a dip-switch or jumper on the machine itself

looking at pictures of the board it looks like there's a bank of 4 switches on the CPU board:

(at the bottom near the blue cap)

...before you tear it apart there might be a cut-out in the metal case to access the dip switches.

Thanks for that - gave it a try with no luck. I have been going through wiring diagrams and I have a sneaking suspicion that there is a wire that loops back to a ground on the I/O board which dictates the cabinet type.

There is a wire which loops back around from Pin B10 to B6 on the 50Pin I/O connector. B6 is a ground and I don't know what B10 is, but the Ridge Racer 2 manual refers to this pin as "RR2SEL."

I've never seen B10 used on any other wiring schematic. I may need to get some photos from others with the DX cabinet to see if they have any wires on the IO that loop back around onto themselves.

Success!

My machine was coming up as Ridge Racer 2 World (Standard). When I inspected the wiring I noticed that I had no wire between pin B6 and B10 (nor any other pins on the IO.) I added a wire between pin B6 and B10 and my boardset came up as Ridge Racer 2 World (50 Inch).  ;)

There are still two other cabinet types in there but the 50inch cabinet type allows for 6 speed, H pattern so I'm happy. Here is a pinout of the IO board that I made whilst figuring this out;
