vinyl for cocktail cab

Hey,

Just looking at cheaper options for my cocktail cab.  It's going to be black with yellow T molding.  I can get a cabinet maker to laminate the whole thing for around $180, painting it will be a little less than that so I'm wondering if I use something like this and cover it myself would definately be a cheaper option, but will it look OK?

Has anyone used anything similar?  I will also be sticking artwork over it which will need to stick to it properly.

I get the feeling my success with it will be wholly based on how smooth and flat I prepare the surface beforehand.

          I did something similar with my DK cabaret style cab. This is the vinyl  I used.

There's some pros and cons to using vinyl but you definitely have to make sure the surface is as smooth as possible. I actually used melamine and used pocket holes to avoid screws on the outside pieces of the cab.
Also some vinyl is a bit thin so you have to make sure you set it properly because if you peel it off again, it could stretch and lose its shape a bit.

yeah, jmike, i might try that seller too. A couple questions:

1. It is thin vinyl, but could you see through it at any point?

2. Was it really 2 feet wide?

edit: whoops the particular cabinet I want to cover is taller than 60". Still curious for future projects, though.

1.The vinyl is a bit thin but you can't see through it, that might depend on what you color you choose though.
2. It was 2 feet wide but the height varies sometimes as much as 2 inches. I emailed the seller and they wanted to refund me $2 (seriously  ). I had the cut 2 inches of my DK cabaret to make sure the orange vinyl covered the sides all the way.

I might have some small pieces leftover I can mail you, if you'd like.

Thanks that is just the info I was looking for. Due to size I may end up doing the vinyl I linked to, and maybe I can post how it holds up for arcade use.

Instead of laminating the plywood for $180, why don't you just buy a sheet of melamine coated MDF or plywood?  You can get a 3/4" 4x8 sheet for like $75.  Even better just buy a sheet of prefinished plywood.  You can get it in classic walnut or any other wood type you like.  I did mine out of white maple

That looks good.  I thought about it when I bought the mdf but they couldn't supply it in black (which is what I wanted) so I went with normal mdf.  Today I will be putting the vinyl on my cab, I have already covered the control panels and looks good.  The vinyl I get is actually thicker than I thought and it's easy to put on.  It is the bubble free type which makes it easier also.  All in all I'm happy with it so far.  $30 for 600mm x 10 metres is a bargain I think.

yea its all cnc cut.  it is the entire box, except the top, because they top is cut out of 1" marine grade plywood.  There is more on my box in the link in my signature...
