Easiest way to remove duplicate and non-working mame roms?
« on: July 09, 2014, 12:42:12 am »
I have hyperspin running now and theres very often five or six copys of a game and it shows up all in the list, takes up space. Whats the best way to filter them out? either by deleting or maybe a hyperspin setting?

I don't know if it's the most efficient way or not, but I just went through my list and then edited the XML file to remove any duplicates (or things like nudie games that I didn't want in the mix).  You can open the file with notepad and just make edits by searching for the title you wish to remove.  In general, it'd be good practice to make a backup copy--that way if you flub something up you can just go back to where you're at right now.

Yes, there is a setting in HS to filter out clones: Launch HyperHQ and go to Wheel Settings -> Navigation/Themes -> click Parents Only check box. However, this may cause some games to disappear unexpectedly. e.g. Pac-Man no longer gets listed as it's technically a clone of Puck Man.

For greater control of listed games, download and use RomLister. It lets you filter out clones, mahjong, adult games, etc. and can output Hyper Spin database (XML) files.

Oh boy, that would take FOREVER!!! I have thousands of roms :P thanks though.

awesome! thanks.  I assume that if I use RomLister I need to check off in the wheel settings, "Use XML Indexes"?

You shouldn't need to worry about that. Think that's just for when you want to set your own jump points when pressing left/right in HS.

I use Mala, but for the games like pacman where I want the clone to show up I just change the xml to indicate that it's a parent.
There are only a few games I bothered doing it for.  Pacman and the 2 player versions of popular 4 player games are the only ones I can think of.
The xml has grown huge and is slow to work with.  Turn off wordwrap.  Copy and paste into it, don't enter one letter at a time.  I have a stripped down version, but it still takes a long time to open and save.

I'm probably going to try out Romlister. But, currently, I have Hyperspin set to only show games I have wheel images for. I'm not sure if that's a option for you or not.

I also, have seen this tool, but I haven't tried it:

It is a possibility, I have all the existing wheel pages and the games that are missing icons I probably wouldn't even know existed anyway lol

Yah, I have Dons Hyperspin, maybe i should use it :P
