ArcadeVGA - which one is this?
« on: June 07, 2014, 01:10:18 pm »
My Arcadevga card died -- no picture gets to my monitor.  No worries as I had another lying around.  I've attached pictures and both cards are identical.

I decided it was time to migrate away from XP, so I got a new SSD HD, installed win 7 64bit and then went to install the drivers for my arcadevga card.  I don't have the CD that came with it, so i tracked down drivers here: http://www.ultimarc.com/avgadrivers.html

First question is, Which card is this?  X550 or HD2400?

I tried both of the PCIe drivers, starting with the x550, but neither of them work.  The ATI catalyst install utility installs and completes fine, but the driver shows as standard generic VGA driver and there are only two resolutions available.  800X600 and 640X480.  Gameex crashes when I start it, probably because the drivers aren't correct.  What am i missing?

Thanks,
Dean

I had this same issue because i was installing the wrong drivers. I mistakenly thought I had a 3000 when it was in fact a 5000. however as I recall the 5000 don't have a fan.

Andy should certainly be able to help, he's answered a million of my stupid questions even when I'm sure he was rolling his eyes as he responded.

let me know if you get it totally working in mame. I'm still having an issue with it grabbing the correct resolution.
although I havent messed with it in a week or two. restoring 3 different arcade cabs so I'm getting that worked on while the weather is nice.

pretty sure I'm missing something simple but any words from those who have gone before me are certainly helpful

Yeah, I've got the correct drivers installed now and Gameex works.

It's been so long since I put my XP version together and I am having terrible resolution issues now too.

The highest my monitor will go under Win 7 is 720X480.  I think I could do 800X600 under XP?  Anyway, I cannot stretch the picture vertically to use the entire screen as I could in XP.

I have spent all morning on this -- giving it another hour or so before I just put the XP drive back in and call it a day.  LOL

I remember having to run some file to get all of the correct resolutions into my MAME folder, looking for instructions on that now at ultimarc.  I'll let you know if i have success and then we can compare notes ;-)

http://www.ultimarc.com/avres.zip

having it dump out the ini files is as far as I got. I don't think its seeing them. I put a post up about it and didn't get a single reply. i figured plenty of people must have gone through this by now but i couldn't find any info searching the forum.

My problem is that i get an error when trying to run AVGres...

Error running in win7 64bit clean install = Run time error 339.  Component comdlg32.ocx or one of its dependencies not correctly registered:  a file is missing or invalid.

Are there any other tools?  I think i'd be all set if i could get the resolutions to be correct. ugh.

One suggestion I have is to check your mame path statements on your FE.

you need to grab the file off the web. I think his read me lists the stuff you need. once the runtimes are installed it should work fine. just make sure all the support files it comes with are in the same directory you run it in.

FE?
FE = Front End

Quote
A front end is software used to launch games. With some emulators it can be quite a hassle to switch between games, as each game may require different settings. A front end can provide the end user with a seamless experience from selecting to playing games. There are many front ends available, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Please check the table on the Front-Ends wiki page for features of various front ends.

I have set up an ArcadeVGA a number of times and never had an issue with it picking the correct resolution.   I would first check to see if it is actually generating the correct ini files.   You can check this by opening one of the ini files for a game and you should see the correct resolution.  If this checks out, double check the location of your ini folder.  Last, double check your arcadevga settings in your mame.ini

ah, ok. I just hadn't seen or it didn't click that FE meant front end.
yea, I'm using hyperspin and I've double checked that already.

if I put the ini files in a folder called /ini how do I tell mame to look for them there, or is there a better way?

There is a default ini folder underneath the mame folder.  All of your ini files should reside there.

Please post the contents of one of your ini files up here.  Perhaps there is an issue with the files
