EloTouch Question...
« on: June 05, 2014, 01:59:52 pm »
Hi! I have a question regarding an ELO LCD touchscreen...  I haven't asked the manufacturer yet because this is sort of an odd situation.  (sorry!)

I'm re-building a touchscreen jukebox and I need to buy a touchscreen monitor.  I'm using the cabinet of a jukebox that once held a 19" CRT touchscreen.  The CRT is dead and due to the cost of fixing it and the excessive burn-in, I'm planning to replace it with an LCD touchscreen.  This is where is gets a little tricky.  If you recall from the days of CRT monitors, a 19" CRT is more like 18" and a 19" LCD is pretty much 19".  This leaves me with a bit of a dilemma that I've thought about a lot over the last few days:

If I buy a 19" touchscreen LCD, it will look great when framed by the jukebox cabinet.  The cabinet's frame around the 19" LCD will leave me with a little "overhang" of the LCD screen.  Visually, this is fine because the extra LCD display surface will be hidden behind the cabinet frame.  I've already figured out how to shift the image on my computer's display adapter so the Windows desktop will be drawn about 1/2" inch in from the actual edges of the screen.  Because I'm shifting the image with the display adapter driver, I'm confident it will be transparent to the operation of Windows.  Hopefully, I've explained that clearly, but if not, I've attached an illustration.

Here's what I'm curious about:  I'm aware the ELO touchscreens need to be calibrated.  I believe the calibration program draws a few crosshatches around the display and asks the user to press on the screen where they appear.  Does anyone know what sort of tolerance the calibration program has, considering I'm shifting the image by 1/2" on all sides?  Any ideas on whether this will really goof up the touch control?

I suppose a way to test this would be to intentionally mis-calibrate an ELO LCD touchscreen by 1/2" on all sides.  Once this calibration is done, does the touchscreen still work with a slightly smaller touch-area?

In my head, it seems like it ought to work fine once it has been calibrated, but I don't have an ELO touchscreen to try this with.  Can anyone shed some light?

Thanks everyone!   :)

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, Ed!  When you say it would revert back, I assume you mean the touch calibration.  That would stink...

As it happens, there is a 17" LCD touchscreen that is made to retrofit my particular jukebox cabinet.  Unfortunately, Happ sells it for $650 + $45 shipping.  It includes a bezel to frame the monitor on the jukebox so the entire LCD screen is used.

It kills me to see other possible monitors sold on ebay for less than $300.  However, if the end result with a $300 monitor is going to be inconsistently functional, then heck, I guess I should just buy the expensive one from Happ.

Once again, thanks!  It sounds like we've both been down this same road, as esoteric as it may be.  Reminds me of why I love this board so much!

I suspected the 17" LCD replacement kit was the answer.  Happ even had a free freight promotion that expired on May 30th...  could have saved me $45 off the inevitable solution!  Oh well...

I don't see why you would have an issue with what you propose, every time I have calibrated a screen it has been fine.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, Barry.  :)   I ended up plunking down the cash for the 17".  We'll see how that goes!
