Needed: AC powered bluetooth speaker that stays on
« on: May 27, 2014, 03:37:02 pm »
I am wanting to put a bluetooth speaker into a 1929 radio cabinet that I have, like this one:

http://krrb.com/posts/80438-sparton-931-antique-radio-200-obo?rf=corner-yomrag

Since the speaker would go where the existing speaker is in the radio, I would prefer that the speaker be AC powered, and be able to be left on at all times.  I expect that the current draw of any consumer bluetooth speaker would be negligible when there is actually no link in use/no music playing.  I can't find any info on the web to validate that....no kill-a-watt users that have documented their bluetooth speaker's power stats and no manufacturers that care to list the power consumption of their device when not paired but turned on.

Asleep but listening would be ideal....but asleep and needing to push a button to awaken is a deal killer.

Anybody have any experience with any particular self-contained Bluetooth speakers out there that might share experiences with me with a model that does (or does not) meet those requirement?  I'd hate to order something from amazon only to find out that it doesn't work well under this kind of unique setting.

After looking around a lot, this is the only device that seems to be always listening for a bluetooth connection, so it would work buried inside a cabinet:

For now, I plan on ordering this and combining it with the computer speaker system that I have in the radio right now.  Eventually, I'll probably replace the computer speaker system with one of my many T-amps I have laying around and place this kind of speaker in the radio....a single speaker that handles both channels from an amp:

If I wire up the AC power on/off to the radio's existing switch, I can turn the receiver and the T-amp on and off.  No separate button to have to push to pair things or to re-pair things when communication is lost.  Jukebox 2012 on my Android phone, and internet radio on my Android phone along with this radio should be a nice setup.
