Any sketchup artists for hire?
« on: May 26, 2014, 03:57:40 pm »
I'm beating myself up trying to create a simple arc...  All I need is the side of the cabinet created.  I can manage the rest.  If anyone's up for a simple, and preferably cheap commission, I'd appreciate the help.

What are you trying to do, exactly?  Maybe freehand something and post that and we'll see what we can do.

I'm pretty much trying to recreate this, in slightly different dimensions (I intend to put in a 14.5"x12.125" vertically oriented monitor), without the base section.  But I can't get those rounded corners on the side panels to save my life.

Ah, you're not using guides.  For instance if you want a 1" radius corner you would drag a guide 1" in from the two edges that form the corner then use the arc tool to connect the guide/edge intersections.  Then drag the arc out till it snaps to "tangent at vertex".

I'm not fully understanding.  I'm going to google around for "guides" and see what you're referring to!

They are one of the functions of the Tape Measure tool.  They are dashed lines that you can snap to with other tools, but that do not behave like construction lines.

Hey,

I'm brand new here, but another thing you might try is this:

  • Draw out your profile with the non-rounded corners
  • Using the Offset tool (F), click the face and drag inward, until you see an outline of the face that sits inside the one you drew originally: let go of the mouse button and type the radius you want the curves to be
  • Now use the Circle tool at the corners and drag out toward an edge until you get a pinkish purple line and let go
  • Delete the sharp corners and clean up the extra lines and there you go!

Of course, this assumes you want the same radius for every rounded corner... regardless, hope it helps!

Man forget that useless Sketchup-stuff, tell me what you want and I modelize it in Solidworks which is a serious CAD-software for 15 000USD

You can send the files to a CNC-carpenter and get the cabinet as a puzzle with 100% acurracy.
