Driving Force GT shifter not recognized properly?
« on: May 22, 2014, 03:58:04 am »
I'm a little confused on the new wheel I got, a logitech Driving Force GT. It's my first wheel of my own and I like it a lot, but the shifters seem to be...well, unpredictable. I tried it with Gran Turismo 3, for example, and I couldn't get the game to recognize the shift paddles on the back of the wheel. I tried different input settings for the shift up/down buttons, but I could only seem to get it set to what the wheel labels as L3 and R3. L1 and R1, the button label on the shifters, don't respond even when the shift up/down buttons are set to L1 and R1. I also can't seem to get the actual shifter to respond either. Perhaps I didn't understand how shifting works (This is my first Gran Turismo game and I've barely started it), but I played some arcade mode on it and shifting worked just by hitting the L3/R3 buttons. So I assume that it's supposed to work that way, especially since my wheel has no clutch pedal.

On another front, I love using the wheel to play OutRun 2 on my PC. However, the shifting there was weird too. I had to fanangle some things to get the shifter to work, and now, the Accept/Cancel menu buttons are now mapped to the shifter. It ended up this way because I couldn't get the 'gear shift axis' input to register the shifter correctly. It only responded for one direction on the shifter in the control settings mode, and in game, the shifter didn't work at all. I mapped the shift up/down buttons to the two directions of the shifter, and now it works, but menu select/back buttons are mapped to the shifter. I'd rather they be on the face buttons on the wheel, but that doesn't let me shift on the shifter! Is there anything I might be missing?

I installed the most recent logitech drivers, and it recognized the shifter, but I couldn't configure the buttons for the shifter itself. Is it mapped to the same thing as the buttons maybe? What's the deal?

I hope that any other users of this wheel can help me out with these issues. Thanks for any help!

and if you want to suggest any more racing games for me to try out now that I have a wheel, please feel free  :D

I can't really comment on the rest of it, but binding the accept/cancel buttons to the shifter is normal operating procedure for Outrun 2k6.  You didn't screw anything up, every joystick button has a secondary menu function.

*edit*  Just to be clear, even if you had used the shifter analog axis, shift up is still Ok and shift down is still Cancel... that's just how it works.

Shift Up = OK/Select
Shift Down = Cancel/Back

Gas = Mode Toggle
Horn = Color Change / Sign in
View = Outrun Mode Change (OR2 only)

Strangely enough the button you have binded to Start rarely allows you to go through all the menus, especially time trials.

It's done this way so that you don't need all kinds of ugly debug buttons to navigate and my next version of Outrun FXT replaces all the keyboard icons with the appropriate arcade button icons.

I'm going to try and get the start button to fake a shift up press as well, so that'll fix a lot of menu issues.

I see. No matter. I can work with the shifter controls. Thanks for clarifying.

What is Outrun FXT, out of curiosity? Some kind of mod?

LOL

You might want to check the hacking outrun 2006 thread... you know the one with over 20,000 views.  ;)

the driving force gt was made for gt5 (or atleast bundled with it) if i recall correctly so that may explain the lack of compatibility with gt3. the button on top are r1 and l2, the "paddle" on the back is r2 and l2. The are digit buttons and not analog like a real dualshock controls(ive taken the wheel apart).

maybe you have a faulty contact? goto devices=> gt wheel=> properties and hit the same buttons a few times to make sure its registering them correctly everytime. Btw the wheel will jerk around when you do this, just ignore that

Yeah why does Logitech do that anyway?  I mean I appreciate a FF test, but integrating it into the button test menu makes it kind of hard.
