Who has done a removeable CP?
« on: December 05, 2003, 03:55:34 pm »
I have seen people thay say they have a removeable control panel. Yet, I have not seen one and the luck people have had.

I am interested in building a cab with a removeable control panel and would like some examples and advice.

Thanks!

I modeled my removable panels on the famous Roswell cab.  You can see it in the Examples section of the site.

My arcade machine...

(click on Arcade on left)

The panel isn't removable as in you pull a lever and it pops off and you stick another in, but if I made another panel the same shape I could easily disconnect four Molex connectors, and this one lifts off and another can be put in its place.  It's held on mostly by its weight, and a little friction.  (stays on pretty well so far.)  It's more like "upgradeable" than "swappable".

If you want to make a removable panel, I suggest finding a plug type that has lots and lots of pins on it, like an IDE cable or something.  The large-type Molex plugs are a bit difficult to pull apart.  Maybe the small-type Molexes are easier, I haven't tried them.

I made detachable, hook-on control panels for my cocktail cab so I can play 2 player fighters etc. (that for obvious reasons need to have both player one & two on the same side) as well as the traditional 2 player cocktail games like Galaga that alternate between player 1 & 2 via screen flipping. It's not quite finished but me thinks it'll work a treat. Check it out...

If you have a lot of time on your hands you could go one step further and do modular panels like I did.  I had removable ones previous to that and like the modular approach much better.

I always PLAN on adding swabbable control panels to my cabinets (even went so far as to make some panels for one cab that I never got around to maming), but I haven't actually done it yet.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I like having swappables.

currently:
1 defender
1 generic 2-player with 3 buttons each + trackball
1 Mortal Kombat 4

I have the parts for a Tron/spinner panel... but have been playing with other toys lately.

I used rs-232 cables to facilitate the swapping.

Just a note, you can buy PCI socket plugs, and you can buy PCI cards that just have the edge connector and some solder points - that would provide you with lots of contacts and it'd be easy to insert and remove.  It's one option for swappables anyway.  If you measured pretty accurately, you could even just slide the panel into an opening and the card would automatically go into the slot and connect all your controls to the ipac.
