mala desktop questions

Hello,

I have two questions:

What does it mean to run Mala as a shell?  Is that different than selecting the Start with Windows option under Mala Start?

I have it setup to rotate Mala when exiting a game so if I run a vertical game and exit, it will switch to the vertical layout.  So it will come out of the game horizontal, then Mala will disappear, show the desktop, then reappear with the vertical layout.  Is there a way to have it not show the desktop when switching?
