Sprint One vs. Sprint 2 vs Sega Turbo
« on: December 05, 2003, 06:53:24 am »
I am kicking around the idea of a Mame driving cabinet, at the moment I have 3 driving cabs in project state.

Sprint One - Beautiful condition. Bad boardset. Pros, would leave me with a parts boardset and spare working monitor for my other Sprint. Cons, would need a 23-24" screen to properly replace the original.

Sprint 2 - Pretty nice condition. Has boardset problem. Pros, would leave me with a parts boardset and spare working monitor for my other Sprint. Has two player control panel. Cons, would need a 23-24" screen to properly replace the original. Sprint 2 is more fun than Sprint One.

Sega Turbo - Complete, but totally dissasembled. Average condition. Has ram error, (unburned, super clean) monitor is missing a resistor, and is otherwise in unknown condition. Pros, this one would be the most work to get going anyway. Would leave me with an ebayable boardset, and repairable monitor. Cons, Mame can't drive the LED scoreboard.

Other info.

Sprint One - Single 360 wheel. Single gas pedal. Single 4 position shifter, Start button, 23" horizontal display.

Sprint 2 - Two 360 wheels, two gas pedals, track select button, 2 start buttons, two 4 position shifters, 23" horizontal display.

Turbo - Single 360 degree wheel, single OPTICAL gas pedal, start button, 20" vertical display.

So, which one would you guys choose, and why, and does anyone have a decent list of 360 driving games and the shifters/buttons that they use?

One other factor to consider is that I plan on repairing an "running" the two that don't get Mamed, along with the fully working (including SHAKER MOTOR) Out Run that I already have.

I would complete the Spint 1 since it's in such good condition.

Why don't you just make a new cabinet from scratch based on the plans from one of the others?

I'd mame the Sprint 2, in such a way that you can still connect the original PCB and run the cab as a dedicated game.

I'd choose that one for the same reason Sprint 2 is funner than Sprint 1, racing games are almost always funner when you're racing against someone besides the computer.

Sprint one sounds like it should be fixed and left alone as a dedicated game. Turbo might be doable, but you'd need to replace the pedal to use it with the other MAME driving games.

I generally don't build cabinets, the cost is too high. I can always buy them way cheaper than I can build them. The woodgrain formica sides alone for a Sprint One would cost me more than I paid for my entire game.

Also, Sprints are black and white, so there is no Mame+Original option available.
