Speaker volume buzz at mid volume levels?
« on: April 19, 2014, 03:13:59 pm »
Hi guys,

I'm trying to wire a volume knob into my system and have noticed that when I do, I get static/a hum/buzz at middle-levels of the (maybe 40%-70%?) volume. You can't hear it when the volume is off and you can't hear it when the volume is on max. Anyone have any ideas? I must be doing something wrong because I've tried 3 pots and they all do it. I'm using the audio-out of my monitor and feeding the audio into my subwoofer/amp. I don't hear it when I don't use a pot, but then again, that would "simulate" a max volume anyway, at which point I don't hear the buzz regardless. Anyone have any ideas? I've attached a diagram of my wiring that I've made. Sorry for the mspaint, but it should get the point across. I've spent about 10 hours with this and it's starting to drive me nuts!!

The paint is simplified, but what I had was an aux cable that I spliced. The aux cable is only about 5" on each side, at which points I used terminal blocks and attached proper speaker wire for each (L,R,G) down to the volume knob. The volume pot then has terminal blocks near it and 22 gauge wire for about 3" on each side.

I'm using this RadioShack 100k dual-ganged pot (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062359)

Did I forget to ground somewhere?

Thanks for your insight!

If only it were that easy! I have a PC and a 360 going into the cab, which is why I am wiring out of the monitor's audio out jack. If I use it with a USB device, I won't be able to lower the 360's volume. I have an HDMI switch feeding into the HDMI in of the monitor.
