X-Men Arcade Cabinet not working - help!
« on: April 14, 2014, 04:10:19 pm »
I purchased an X-Men arcade cabinet several years ago.

When I purchased it, it was working.

After several years of not using it, however, now I'm trying to play it, and I'm having some problems...

First, I noticed that the power cord did not have the ground plug, so I went to Home Depot and purchased a plug with a ground.  I then cut the power cable below the existing plug.

One thing I noticed right away was that there was a green wire, but the other two were both black.  According to the person in HD, that meant that both wires were probably hot, and it shouldn't make a difference which was connected to each (as long as the green was connected to the ground).

So I put on the new plug, plugged the machine in, and turned it on.

The marquee lights up, but nothing else happens except the screen turns green.  I can't see anything on the screen and there is no sound.

Being a total noob, I'm not sure what I should do next...

Is it possible I should try switching the two black wires on the plug?

As I mentioned, the machine hasn't been used for several years, so it's possible that is totally unrelated and there are other issues.

I know this isn't much to go on, and I apologize for my lack of knowledge.

Pictures are attached in hopes that may help.

Thanks!

If you're getting power to anything on the machine, you connected the plug correctly.   :applaud:  So you can leave that alone.

A few questions:
1)  Where are you located?  Sometimes one of us can swing by and check stuff for you if you're close enough.
2)  Are you getting sound?
3)  Which power LEDS are lit?  a)  The PCB itself should have one somewhere (not always).  b)  The power supply.  (small box looking one)

Here's what I'd do in your case:
1)  Turn the machine off and unplug it.  Then re-seat the PCB connector:  Carefully remove the Jamma connector from the board and check for dust.  Then plug it back in.  Turn the machine on and see what happens.
2)  Check the power supply (test it with a multimeter to make sure the voltages are correct).  Use the screw to adjust the +5v accordingly.  If things don't seem to be the right voltage, replace the power supply.  (Usually under $30).
3)  Check the fuse on the back.

First, thank you so much for the quick reply.

1).  I'm actually located south of Greensboro, North Carolina.  I wish these cabinets weren't so heavy and difficult to move - would love to be able to easily transport it to a shop where someone could look at it! :)
2).  No sound.  Just the marquee light and green monitor screen.
3).  I actually don't see lights on either the PCB board or the power supply (so either neither has lights or they aren't lighting).

1)  Alas, no difference.
2)  Actually I'm even more confused now that I've really looked at what is hooked up to the power supply - all I'm seeing connected is ground connections and AC connections.  There are cables running from the board that have been electrical taped on the ends and aren't currently connected to anything - wonder if those should be connected to the power supply (such as +5V and +12V)?

Like I said, when I originally got the arcade it worked.  I took out the Konami board and was in the process of replacing with a J-Pac board (http://www.ultimarc.com/jpac2.html) so that I could hook up my computer - maybe I removed the +5V and 12V at that time and totally don't remember it (I AM getting old)? ;)

I could be seeing the power connections wrong - hopefully the images posted in the original post will be useful to see if you are seeing the same situation I am...

Thanks again!

Before you go any further, use your multimeter to verify that the power supply is putting out 5v and 12v on those two terminals -- if it's not good, you need to check/fix the AC input wiring.

Looks like the only output voltage connected on your power supply is -5v which isn't used in this cab.   :dizzy:

The manual shows that the board uses 5v and 12v -- use the harness pinout (pg 4) to trace the 5v and ground wires from pins 1-4 and A-D on the JAMMA connector to the proper terminals on the power supply.

Pins 6 and F are 12v lines -- one goes to the power supply, the other to the coin door.

Also make sure you aren't mixing your logic ground and frame ground (FG) connections -- the thick green wire on the ground terminal looks like it might be frame ground, just like the green wire on the left side of the coin door pic.

Yes, the board is definitely not getting any power.  You have nothing connected to the 12v connector or 5v (+5 NOT -5) connectors.  Check out this article to help with Jamma.  http://therealbobroberts.net/jh.html

Also, look at the photo below to see what wires are +12v and +5v (photo courtesy of Bob Roberts article.)

Thats what caught my eye. that green wire at the top of your power supply that looks like its on the ground terminal and shouldnt be there.  Your power supply looks wired wrong at the bottom too. If you have a 3 prong plug you should have 3 wires going to the power supply. It might be a good thing you dont have power running to the board.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Page 10 of the manual (A.C. Wiring Harness) also indicates that there is an isolation transformer for the monitor and power for the interlock switch and marquee.

Not quite sure how they are all supposed to be wired because that :censored: idiotic diagram shows all wires converging to a single point as they reach the power supply -- don't try that at home, kids.   :dizzy:      :badmood:
