PunchOut bezel ideas ?
« on: April 07, 2014, 12:56:33 pm »
Looking at doing a PunchOut inspired bartop project.
It would fit well with my fleet of Nintendo cabinets.
The marquee, CPO, and Side Art are readily available online.
I know that in the arcades PunchOut was a dual monitor machine,
my bartop however will be a single monitor cabinet.

I got me thinking, PunchOut has no bezel art....anyone ever done a bezel for a PunchOut project ? Anyone have any ideas they could give me ?
Perhaps this is something I'd like to take on.
I think a bezel (in the style perhaps of Dk, Dk Jr, DK 3) could look cool.

Thoughts ?

Pick out your favorite 4 characters from PunchOut or the Wii version.  Put them in the circles like on the Donkey Kong Bezel. Use the colored lines to represent the ropes in a ring.  Include characters on the sides as spectators so that it looks like a boxing ring from the top down.

I'm with you %100 on the boxing ring from above idea!
I actually thought of that and was coming back t post that idea with the ropes, etc.

I took a look at the Arcade Flyer site (name escapes me now) and looked @ all the PunchOut flyers. One has some decent character art.
Hoping perhaps I can find one of them free sites/tools to vectorize the images and clean them up (I have ZERO skill in Illustrator).

 The Arcade Flyer Archive

I suggested the wii version,  because often time the artwork  on the cab was so much more detailed the actual game. As a plus, it may be more readily available.  Best of luck.  I find my PCS are to laggy to do art on.  I think the learning curve wouldn't be so hard to overcome if the PC was faster, but I digress.

The Wii version of the game has some great character art, and as you said is readily available. I love the King Hippo character art !

I'm just not sure if it would be "retro" enuff. None the less I am going to give it a try.
I have a few projects to wrap up first, then this project takes center stage.

Was looking at a site that ChanceKJ posted in his Nintendo build thread and found ity has a bunch of the sprites etc. (including shots of the rings) from Mike Tysons Punchout that might be useful for your bezel ( http://www.mariouniverse.com/sprites/nes/mtp )

Thank you for posting the link.
I'm working on the CPO now.
Then I'll get onto the bezel.
I hope I can create something that I feel works with the original art.

You need something like this:

One green, and the other red.  Or somehow an alternating red green led behind them.  Change push to punch.

I do like the reject buttons, however my machine will have no coin slot.
I've completed all MaLa projects I had on the go so now I can move onto bezel and CPO.
I found  this hi-res CPO, http://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=256582&page=12&view=expanded&sb=5&o=&fpart=1&vc=1

However in Photoshop when I remove the grid you can still see faint traces of it (BOO!  :banghead:)
Just need to find some time to work with it I guess.
I'd like to sort of hack it up and use it to make my custom CPO. Then I'll add the grid effect back.

Thank you to the great members here on this forum I was able to get some HUGE help with my Punch-Out CPO. A cleaned up and stripped down version of the CPO was posted for me. I was able to take the elements I needed and create my CPO.
I still need to re-draw the grid pattern and change the colors on the original logo to work with the existing CPO color scheme.

I also tried out Vector Magic to convert the original flyers into vector so I can use the character art to create my bezel.

I'm looking  for a stripped down version of the DK bezel (with character art removed) so I can begin this bezel.

Just wanted to thank JD Fan who in another thread provided me with a stripped down version of the DK bezel. I plan on using that to create my Punch-Out bezel.

I'm @ work and not on the PC. But I'm getting ideas down on paper here.
I think I'll use the green, grey and white color scheme from the original CPO.
I'm thinking to add back the circles as they are on the DK bezel, but only 3.
Leaving the left corner without a circle and adding the full size character art from the Punch-Out flyer. The other corners will have the Glass Joe & Bald Bull images.
Also thinking of adding the gloves to the other circle.

That leaves me another question (I guess request) in the illustrator file for either the marquee or side art do the gloves appear in full with the "pow" effect in the middle ?

Yeah, either/or really.
I'm not familiar with Illustrator, so I'm not sure if the gloves would appear in full as a seperate layer ? Or would only what you can see be available ? (if that makes sense)

If they did appear in full I'd like to use them on the bezel.

Here you go - just the gloves and also included the Nintendo copyright text (in case you wanted it for the other pieces where it was removed since it was there in the ai file as separate text !) I included as PNG,PSD,PDF and AI in the zip file.

Amazing, thank you again JD Fan.
I promise now to not bother you! LOL

Question - for someone with skills (such as yourself) how long does it take to seperate that stuff from the sideart/marquee ?

Question - for someone with skills (such as yourself) how long does it take to seperate that stuff from the sideart/marquee ?

You click on the element and it highlights the outline of that element and then you drag it off to the side (pretty much like having each element as a layer in PS and then moving the layer) - so as long as the ai file has those parts as separate elements (as these did) it takes a few seconds to move things and then save the file.

So as long as the element has what you want it is easy -- becomes more difficult if the original file does not have the entire shape of for instance the gloves - If the maker only drew the part that was going to show under the lettering then you'd have to draw the remaining portion after moving the unwanted portions. So depends on the original file but is usually pretty simple if someone has already created the file !

I think I have an old version of Illustrator someplace.
I think it is about time I dig it out and give it a go.
