Solved: Ultrastick 360 is not registering movement
« on: April 07, 2014, 03:50:46 am »
Hi all

Been away for a while (3 years) since life has been very busy. But I have now finally started finishing my Bartop Arcade project started back in 2009.

I can remember that I got the two ultrasticks working back in 2009 for a test for the machine setup, before I dismantled it again. I have since done a complete reinstallation on the computer with tinyxp. I have downloaded the ultramap software, have upgraded the ultrastick to the new firmware of v 2.5.

When I go to the "Game Controllers" in the windows menu, then I can see that the computer registers when i press the buttons. But there is no registration of movement, when the joystick is moved. And when I go to Ultramap, I can easily program the joystick, but I see no movement when the joystick is moved. I have two joysticks, the used to work simultaneously, but now no one is working, either at the MAME computer running tinexp, or at my laptob running Windows 7.

Help are needed in trouble shooting this problem.

Thanks in advance!

Christian

Did you assign different IDs to each of them? Did you try each one alone without anything else connected to the PC?

Have you done the final step of the firmware upgrade which is to find the "composite device" in Device Manager under the USB Controllers entry and right click and "uninstall" it, then unplug and reconnect.

Yes, they have separate ID's

No, I wasn't aware of that. I tried it and it partially solved my problem. If I install the firmware upgrade version 2.5, uninstall the composite device and load a map to the stick. Then the Ultrastick works. I can reboot the computer and it still works. But if I then unplug the Ultrastick, to do the firmwareupgrade on the other stick, then it begonies unresponsive when plugged in again.

So How do I make the computer remember the setting when the stick is unpluged?

I have had some similar problems with my U360, but my problem was that the joystick didn't register movement after I rebooted my PC.  I found that running the ultra map tool and changing to a different profile and back again would fix it, so I created a batch file like this that runs when my PC boots:

ultramap.exe c:\notanalog.ugc
ultramap.exe c:\analog.ugc

With this batch file workaround in place, everything works fine.  I was never able to truly root cause why it has this problem.

TY, that solved the problem. I just had to change the map in Ultramap, and not just overwrite it with analog. eg. change it to "4 way" and then back to "analog" and the it works.

Glad I could help.  It took me a while to figure out that I had to change it to a different profile before setting it back to analog.

I seem to have the same problem as you now dfwdennis, my computer forgets the settings after each reboot.

I have never written a batch file before, but I understand it\s done with a simple text editor eg wordpad.

But where should it be placed, so it is executed with each startup?

I'm using Windows XP.  If you create it with a .bat extension then you can add it to the startup programs list and it will run on boot.
