Which happ pushbuttons and joysticks to buy for fighters!?
« on: December 03, 2003, 01:19:19 am »
Hey guys was just wondering if the Competition joystick was the best one to get for street fighter fans, I know oscarcontrols said it was by far the best. Also which happ buttons should I get? Which one's most resemble the marvel vs capcom arcades? I dont know the difference between the competition pushbuttons and the normal PUSHBUTTON WITH
HORIZONTAL MICROSWITCH happs has. THanks for the help guys

I use Happ Comps....they make pulling off supers and 2-in-1s a breeze.

I would recommend the happ competition joysticks and horizontal pushbuttons. They play great and feel just like the arcade. The competition joysticks allow you to his the corners easier making dragon punches and stuff much easier.

There is a great review here:

personally I like the convex (dome) buttons for fighters...but most people like the concave (divit) style.

And the competition sticks are nice. I've personally tried both Comps and Supers and the Comps are much better IMO
5 MAME cabs and counting...

Ever wonder what full side art looks like?

Hmm...  well for some people Competitions are much better because you feel the corners a lot more, but my problem with them is that games like Snk vs Capcom or King of Fighters 2002 your doing a lot of SNK style'd super moves.  When the joystick is constantly sticking to the corners, its way harder to pull off a terry's power geyser.  So it's all bout the style you play, I personally use supers on all my sticks, although perfect 360s are by far the best, but I dont have that kinda money to throw around.  So I'd suggest supers if your good at knowing where the corners are and play a lot of games that requre a lot of half circles, and more SNK style moves.  If your playing like ONLY street fighter games where your doing uppercuts, fireballs, and half circles only, competitions work great for that.
In terms of buttons, that's also a feel thing.  Both horizontals and competition pushbuttons *concave and convex* both have pretty light springs so they're easy to push and what not.  The competitions are smooth so its a little easier to mash, but the horinzontals are pretty much just as easy.  The horizontals feel good for fighters and old school games, so if your going to be playing any older games, get horizontals, but if your sticking to fighters competitions are a good bet.

I just read some more reviews and forums and a lot of people said P360 happ joystick is the best stick to get? I think the competition seems good for me, but I don't like the clicking sound that people say it makes. What is the arcade joystick that will most resemble the one found on Marvel Vs Capcom 2 cabinets? I know the one in the arcade doesn't have clicking sounds, so I would like to get one like that. Thanks for helps guys

I think the ones that don't click are optical, like the P360.  You can look forward to a little bit more difficult hookup with the P360s, and a lot more money (I was making a 4P panel so they were out of the question).  The clicking sound is kind of annoying though.  I think between that and the Supers bouncing around a lot, the P360s might be on my buy list in the near future.

What I'd be interested to hear is, how many people got other kinds of joysticks just to save money over getting the P360s, but ended up changing their minds later and getting the 360s because they're so much better?  (thus spending more money rather than saving it?)  cuz I think that's where I'll be soon.

I have a 4 plater panel.  I used 2 P360's for player 1 + 2 and 2 Supers for 3 + 4.  The P360's feel very similar to the Supers.  It is slightly harder to hit the diagnols of the P360 than the Supers.   I feel that the p360's work great for both capcom and snk fighters.

I heard the problem with diagonals on the p360s are related to a bad batch Another forum called SHoryuken has a lot of discussion on this. They even emailed happs and happs told them they have heard a lot of complaints on the latest batch and will investigate this.

Is the clicking on the competitions joysticks that noticeable?

I do not believe that my P360 joysticks are defective.  Check out this joystick review comparing the P360's to supers

That would be me... But, I can't really help you because my first sticks were ultimates  ::)...

Who has the sound on the game turned down low enough to hear the clicking of the sticks? Most arcade sticks click. Turn the game up and you'll never notice the clicking. Its true the old school sticks didn't click, they were leafswitches. They also required frequent maintenance like cleaning and adjusting. You can still get leaf switches if the clicking bothers you that much.
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.

I hear the clicking quite a bit.  It's actually pretty loud, unless the volume is up high enough to disturb the other parts of the house while I'm playing.  It's worst when I've got four people on it at once - it really adds up with more players.

I think it's partly because the joystick is mounted in wood.  Something that clicks or vibrates has its sound amplified quite a bit when it's sitting against wood.

Comps and Horizontals are it..

but....

Supers are better (imho) for classics (especially timepilot, Gyruss ect).  And you have a certain zen about playing fighters with them.... Why? You don't know where the corners are....

So you cant slam some moves in... you have some have some control.

....

but all in all... comps and 360s.... bad reviews for the ultimates...

And I hear the jsticks are great also

I have to been asking the same questions about joysticks.  I am considering either the

1.  Happ Competition Joysticks
Or
2.  Ultimarc T-Stik Plus

The advantage I see with the T-Stick Plus is that there is a switch for 4/8 way.  So playing those classics won't be a problem.

Does anyone have any comments on the comparisons of these two joysticks?

On the P360, isn't there an actuator switch for 4/8 way?  If so, where is it?
Dumb questions deserve dumb answers.

Just got my T-Stick Plus, and the first stick I happened to buy was a Competition.

Summary:
1) T-Stick Plus has that nifty 4/8-way switch.  (Comp does not)
2) Ball tops are available for the T-Stick.  ("pear" only for Comp)
3) Comps have a longer throw than the T-Stick.
4) I prefer the stock Comp handle to the stock T-Stick handle.
5) T-Sticks do not come with Cherry microswitches.
6) T-Stick switches come standard with 1/4" connections; the Comp has the more common 3/16" connections.
7) The T-Stick is harder to move than the Comp.

I don't think you can definitively say which is better.  I haven't tried the T-Stick with fighters; I bought it for a classic vertical cab for the ball-top look and 4/8-way functionality.  I'd hoped it would be a good replacement for the 8-way Wico I had in there, but I've found it really only *looks* like the Wico; it definitely doesn't *feel* like the leafstick.

I think I'd prefer the Comp (for fighters) due to the fact that it's closer to the sticks that Capcom put in Street Fighter cabs to begin with.  Can anyone confirm that?  Armadillo, didn't you work there?

Coleman

Are you guys crazy? I don't know how into fighting games you all are, but it's all I play. Most of us in the chat room that are the fighting game freaks live and die by the supers. I can't imagine playing alot of fighting games with the comps. I think comps are better suited for the 3d fighters, especially soul caliber. But if you're playing capcom and neo-geo fighters, you can't do better than the supers.
