Light for Illuminated Happs Trackball
« on: December 02, 2003, 09:10:57 pm »
Any ideas for installing a light under a happs trackball.  I am using an IPAc and OPTIPAC can I grab power from there?  What type of bulb (watts) are people using? and How did they set it up?

I powered my bulb from the computer power supply.  It depends on your bulb really, but I would certainly not reccomend using your *PAC to power the bulb.  Power it from your computer.

I just ran two wires to a molex connector and plugged it in like a drive.

Is there anywhere that this is shown with a diagram or in more detail.

I used a 6 watt bulb with a bayonet mount that I got from Radio Shack.  To power it, I got a 5 watt universal AC adapter, also from Radio Shack, cut off the non-plug end of the chord, and attached one wire to each connection on the bayonet mount.  Insert bulb into bayonet mount, plug in adapter, and voila.  Let there be light!

I took the yellow wire and the black wire from my computer power supply (for drive power) to get 12 volts to a blue LED from radio shack.

I did a crazy mounting job with a plastic lid with a hold cut in the middle for the lamp - screwed in place so that the bulb was centered behind the trackball light hole.

I actually bought the little lamp clip from happ - but didn't buy a lamp...so I decided to use the 12v blue light I already had.

Worked pretty good...
5 MAME cabs and counting...

Ever wonder what full side art looks like?

This is the route I went http://www.glowire.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=G&Product_Code=4CLWCM&Category_Code=CM
Just pull the 12v off of pc power supply or other 12v source in your cab.  A couple of pieces of electrical tape to attach it to the bottom and you're done and it's bright enough that you can see the glow with full lights on!

They have multiple colors, but I just went with the white.

I did the same thing AFTER trying the bulb HAPP sold me.  The Leds are SUPER bright.  it's really nice.    I also went with white on my blue ball.  heheh...blue ball.

Ditto on trying the one that Happ sold me first.  Could barely see the trackball when the lights were off.  The LED's are they way to go.

Where can you get the Molex connectors that you plug in to?  Like the plugs on the back of hard drives or CD ROMs, not like the ones on the power supply.

Wow, great minds think alike and all that:

http://retroblast.com/reviews/lazer.html

The 4-led setups from Glowire really are extremely bright, and they produce a great blue glow from the Happs trackball.

Found some, will keep looking for other sources:

You can get the Molex connectors for good prices from Happ, as well as a little piece of hardware that screws into the bottom of the Happ trackballs and holds a wedge-base incandescent lamp right under that hole.  I don't know which (if any) Molex connectors fit the ones inside a PC though.  I removed one PC power connector and crimped a 4-pin square Molex onto the wires it left behind.  You might have to get PC compatible Molexes from the link the other guy gave you.

I'll be back later with the part number for that lamp holder...

Sorry, can't find the part number.  Think I threw away my order sheet.  Call 'em, they'll hook you up.
