Using MAME32 0.66.  The following shows my current setup.

J    --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type-- b5 b6
       b1 b2 b3
    b7

I have buttons 1-3 on the bottom row, 4-6 on the top row and button 7 (which is not used in this game on the bottom left)

What that default button configuration correct or shold I move the 1-3 to the top row and 4-6 on the botom.  How would it work for MK? Where are their buttons situated?

I'm not sure if this is what you are asking for, but the buttons are layed out in an 'X' pattern for MK in the arcades as follows:
     HP     HK
          BL
     LP      LK
RN

Where:
H=High,   L=Low
P=Punch, K=Kick
RN=Run (Not used in MK1 or MK2)

what I did was

     HP  BL  HK
     LP  BL  LK  RN

(but I don't use the run that often and I have the extra 4th on right.... considering moving it)

MAME32 Error
     Exception at EIP=004330A7: ACCESS VIOLATION
While attempting to read memory at 033E44D0

I get that error when i try and load MK (any revision) and i've tried it from multiple sources too all with the same results
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again

I use bees as a mf'n pen

isn't the important question here what button is what in MAME?

like..Button 1 in the MK rom is What?  HP? LP?

once you know what each button is then you know where to set it.  I spent like 45 minutes one time trying to figure this out and eventually had it set so it was close to right but last time i fired it up it didn't work
but my button configuration is the same..like this:

456
123

I had
button 1 set to low punch
button 2 set to Block
button 3 set to low kick
button 4 set to high punch
button 5 set to Block
button 6 set to High Kick

But I don't remember what button is what in the MK roms
does this make any sense?

if someone made a .cfg file of that it'd be awesome...I may try again tonight now that you guys have me thinking about it..but if someone else could post it, that'd be great...

OK here is the deal, I got it working ok but like like I wanted to.  In the INPUT (THIS GAME) settings there are buttons 1 -5 to set up (oddly two places for button 3).

Any way here is what i wanted:

4HP   5BL    6HK
1LP    2BL    3LK

Since there is no button 6 to program in the settings for that game, I set it up like this:

4HP   5HK    6(not used)
1LP    2LK    3BL

Mortal Kombat II was set up the same way.

But I might run into the same problem with MK3 where as my button 7 seen here:

  456
  123
7

Is what I wanted to setup the run button with.   any body have any other ideas?

So you just want to have 2 of the same button? That's not a problem in MAME. When you are setting the input, press all of the buttons on your controller that you would like to activate that input. It should now say "[Key 1] OR [Key 2]" (whatever keys you used on your controller). MAME seems a bit clumsy at this, but just play around with it and you'll understand how it works.

What Mame button is what MK button has been changed a few times in the Mame code, I think...

If you want to know, just fire up MK, push Mame button 1, and see what the guy does.  You can usually distinguish between HP and LP etc. pretty easily.

And you need the Run button for lots of the fatalities and combos and stuff, so it's best to have it accessible.  I put it as the middle top button on my setup, cuz I don't have an extra button-4.
