We must pass this bill now.  It is too long to read.  We won't know how much it costs until it is passed into law!

I need dimensions. My plan is to shove an Intel NUC into one and make it a free standing, wall powered, wireless video, Game Center with every NES/SNES/GB/Playchoice title inside. Shelled with a Nintendo themed frontend. I want to know what the physical size of the Scoremaster is because it's a clean and simple looking controller in comparison to the Advantage. Score masters were all PAL (I think) so before I spend some money on it I wanna know what I'm getting into.
Neat.
Maybe message someone that posts a youtube video about one?

EBAY has a ton up for bid, some posts show better angles. Asking the some of the sellers may help.

I used to have them.  You're going to have some issues packing something like a Raspberry Pi into that case with all of the buttons and such.  It's not as big as it may look.

Here is a link to a project someone else did so you can get a better idea of the size and depth.

Why not stick a Google TV stick into the case?  That and a Kade or Teensy (whatever that is) and you are golden.

A NUC won't fit, and a Pi, well that is up for another debate.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

Don't take this the wrong way... but I can hammer a nail in with a rock.. it doesn't mean I should.  He's trying to help you... the most practical solution is almost always the best solution.

I knew somebody that had one of those back in the day... they aren't all that great.  I mean it's not arcade quality buttons, the sticks are really mushy and 90% of your console games are easier to play with a gamepad anyway.  Also the button layout is bad for fighters, which is the only type of games this would really be suited for.

SFII on the snes uses the l and r buttons for the two strong attacks, so the layout you want is:

y x r
b a l

Mortal Kombat and all the competitors all use similar layouts.  Unfortunately every single snes arcade stick that I know of is laid out wrong like the two you posted, meaning for every single solitary fighting game you have to go in and reconfigure the buttons.

I had a different ascii pad back in the day.... it's uglier (just a black plastic) but had a slightly better build quality.  That being said it still had the crappy layout so I ended up never using it.

They just aren't worth it imho.... at least not without modding.  I mean if you were going to try to interface with an actual snes I could see going to the trouble, but as-is why not start with a pc/360-based stick and go from there?  Or build one from scratch if you are looking for a particular aesthetic.

The form factor is really going to hurt you on snes sticks. Even if you manage to fit the components in there, remember even these puny PCs on a chip generate heat.  You can't just cram it in a box.  I mean these sticks are really shallow... I don't even think they are an inch deep in most areas.

I hope some of this helps.  I'm not trying to discourage you from your project, but I think you need to start with a different stick, which seems to be the consensus by everyone that's replied thus far.

The PS1 had some really nice arcade type sticks with metal housings that had more depth.

The Saturn had even better ones.  If you're really putting an emulator in there and are going to rewire the stick I would consider starting with one for the Saturn.  They were made with fighters and shooters in mind.

In that case the HORI SNES stick would do a lot better for you.  Still bigger and heavier than the plastic one you have posted above.

I know airplay, I know Maximus, I know windows. And I know if I can make one fit I can make it cool. The point is to use a Nintendo stick as these are as close to a first party controller you can get. They resemble the consoles and bleed original SNES designs. That's the challenge.   ...and maybe build a wireless player two SNES controller to match...

Speaking of which... more suggestions incoming.

I get that you like the look of these sticks, but what I'm telling you is that they play horribly.  If you like the look then replicate it.  It wouldn't be hard at all.  Get a generic box, go to the hardware store and get some "snes gray" paint mixed up and paint the shell.  Then get some low profile sanwa buttons in the appropriate colors and make the fake snes buttons so it looks like the top of a snes.  Now you'll have all kinds of room inside and have a joystick that isn't mushy and a properly laid out button arrangement.

It isn't a good idea to pick something that is fairly terrible just because it looks pretty... that almost never ends well. (In real life pursuits as well.  ;) )

I agree with Howard. This could be a good opportunity to roll your own stick in complete SNES fashion. Purple and Gray all the way! You can size it exact, add USB to snes port adaptors to the side for multiple players on real snes gamepads.

But I want to make sure I can use airplay as a wireless video tech (I want to avoid having any holes for ports cut into the case unless it's ventilation and it's 100% needed).

I'm not for or against your project but... YAY.

I never understood the "case modders" incessant need of slicing holes in their boxes when they're trying to get a "look". For example, chopping out a big gaping hole in the back of an NES box so they can reach all the PC ports despite the fact that there are modern motherboards that can not only easily fit inside but still have room to reroute the ports. This is in addition to the number of available methods that allow case modders to reconfigure the ports, eg feeding USB through the NES front ports.

Well if you are wanting the "pal" snes look, if you look at a sfIV matcatz stick... the standard edition, not the deluxe.... it's shape is roughly that of the pal snes just a bit wider.

There are sites where you can get a custom label printed for the mad catz sticks for a little bit of nothing.  Then all you would have to do is print a label to mimic the very flat pal snes and swap out the button/stick colors.

While the sfIV edition of this stick is pretty pricey, they used the same stick for lesser known games (like WWE titles) that you can get a lot cheaper.

I have to disagree with Howard on one thing.  There are plenty of NES and SNES games that play better with arcade controls, and even plenty that are exclusives, not just arcade ports.  Aside from fighters, there are plenty of shmups that are much better with a stick, and I could make an argument for some of the tougher platformers.

However, I have to strongly agree with his other point, which is that the sticks and buttons on those things are very poor.  It would be a ton of work to end up with something that as an actual controller is pretty mediocre.  Unless this will be a novelty that sits in a display, I think the most important thing should be that it plays well.  If you want a challenge, how about finding a way to use proper sticks and buttons.  You could either find a way to mod those cases to fit them, or you could make your own replica case.  It would play soooo much better.

You mean Nintendo made another console after the greatest console of all time, the NES?  I didn't get the memo for that system.

Thanks of the input and suggestions guys.

I know i'm going against the grain for this project, and a lot of you seem to think its stupid/crazy/foolish, and that i'm better off just building something custom, but I gotta see this through.

I've ordered an SNES Advantage from Lukie Games for like $45 shipped. It was actually cheaper than buying one locally at a used game store that wanted $100+  and i'd have to wait for one to become available, (like... seriously?!).  Anyways, Once it gets here i'll evaluate what platform will fit inside best.  I'm hoping a stripped down NUC with a couple components desoldered from the board will work as planned. If not i'll look at other options (Android, etc).

Are you using a working Advantage, or a non-working one?
