RCAID - First Ever Build
« on: May 30, 2014, 08:18:27 pm »
Hi guys so this is my first post and its going to be a big one, sorry about that but whilst i was waiting to be accepted i made alot of progress.
A little about the project i suppose.

Its my sons 7th birthday on the 16th of June and i was showing him an arcade machine on YouTube, he is a bit of a computer geek like me to be fair and his words were "Daddy i must own one of these, buy me one for my birthday please" So i looked at the price and thought, maybe i can build one, i done some research and figured, why not ill give it a try, on a budget.

Let me introduce to you - RCAID

This is subject to change since i changed the colour scheme lol

Like i said first project but i would love to share the whole experience with you guys.
I have my Original xbox, i also have a bigger hard drive ready to go and Coinops and vision ready to install.

The above image is my first prototype of my light marquee, the name RCAID is a play on words as my sons name is Caid, and this will be eventually for his birthday present :)

I will update these posts as i go through the build, plans in hand and ready to start rolling :)

Cleaned up the main post, each spoiler contains each update for easy access!

UPDATE 1.0
Got my xbox running coin ops today and started working on some more designs, taking influence from designs shared in this thread (Thanks guys)

I will go and buy some of the mdf i need tomorrow, but so far i am loving the Midaway Mortal Kombat design for my Cab.

Here is a pic of Caid testing it out with his all time favourite mario game (i know its not SMB3 ;) lol)

UPDATE 2.0

So here are my plans. I have changed my mind a million times but settled on a bartop, i was orginally going to go full size but i dont want to bite of more than i can chew, and if this goes well, i will be equipped with more knowledge for a full size machine next time (my machine :) )

I found several bartop designs that were awesome on the interweb but none that would of done what i needed so i took several ideas from several designs and came up with my own that will work, Hopefully lol

The T-Mold and angles were found on a website that escapes me, but a bit of tweaking and i can use it on my cab.

Update 3.0

So we have another update, still hardware and software related but its progress :)

I finally upgraded the hard dive for the original xbox, its now boasting a lovely size 160gb hard drive, large enough for full coin ops 6 and for me to add a few extras if needed and a custom splash and boot :)

This is chimp transferring the data from my stock hard drive which already boasted coin ops 6 lite :)

New hard drive, Seagate 160gb lockable drive.

UnleashX dashboard showing a hug improvment in size on the F drive :)

And finally, coin ops FTP has been started :)

Well thats it for now, we are at least getting somewhere on this side :)

Update 4.0

Small update here guys, new custom splash for the bootup :)

Update 4.0

x22 Buttons ordered
 - x16 Black
 - x6 White
 - x1 1 player button
 - x2 2 Player button

x2 8 way rotational arcade sticks ordered

x2 Kade Device ordered

Going to buy the wood today and get this baby cut!

Update 5.0

Whooo some major progress today :)

Drawing Out :)

More Drawing, making sure everything is right!

First side cut

Marking out the second side

Going well so far, here are some more pics :)

Update 6.0

A few more pics from what i got done today between the rain and then the sunshine :)

Update 7.0

Yay all the buttons etc turned up :)

Kade Device x2

My printer broke so i had to create a jig from scratch, here it is

Here is the 2 player CP using the jib i created earlier. Still have 1 player, 2 player and start to attatch to the bottom of the CP.

Never thought of doing carbon, but i saw someones pedastal and he used red LED's and carbon vinyl, it looked awesome.

Sticking the Vinyl carefully

Because i only used 9mm MDF with support i couldnt use T-Mould, i used this chrome car strip that was cheap enough on eBay and i think it looks cool.

CP covered in carbon

I am waiting for the rest of my vinyl right now and then i can get this thing almost complete. Wiring is on the list after that then the marquee :)

Update 8.0
My messy wiring, never have been any good at cable managment lol

And here is a short video of the progress so far.

NOTE if the video is the wrong rotation, its being sorted by YouTube it just takes a little while lol

Zippyy sticks and Kades.  Looks like one of MY builds!

Good job so far, Caid's gonna love it.

Oh yeah - welcome to the forums.  Good job jumping in head first!

Looks great so far. Where did you get that vinyl? I like it!

Also, your son has great taste. Mario World > Mario 3  ;D

I actually got the vinyl from eBay, i orginally had this grand idea of doing retro GFX but i saw someone else build a pedastal with carbon fibre and red leds and loved it so decided on that route instead.

Updated alot today, Front face bezel been "carbonised" lol as has the top and sides, now need to finish the trim off and get some chrome corner angle for the two top sides and two bottom sides. Sort out the speakers and then get the light and marquee.
I also added a power button to it.

Looking good men

Just curious to know why you chose XBOX 1, and not 360? The Variety of gaming is bigger, especially when it comes to arcade. (XBLA) Provided that the XBOX 360 is RGH ;D

Thank you!

I had a total toss up of which way to go with this but eventually decided to with Xbox original over 360 for a few reasons, the cost would of been higher as i dont have a clue how to RGH lol plus i only have one 360 which i dont want to risk anything with, secondly was the ease of modding it and getting coinops etc, however all been said i plan on doing a RGH 360 cab after this for me :)

yes me too I'm planning my next project an XBOX RGH arcade.

This  is quite different with the RGH. Everything is so simple and easy. and a lot of games :P

Today you can get XBOX RGH actually relatively cheap. Because of the new Xbox was released this year ...

By the way how did the wiring the joysticks  with Xbox?  can you show us some video or images?

great progress so far, if this is a first build that makes it even more impressive. Name is a great play on your son's name
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

Thank you Malenko, there are some imperfections that i am not happy about, like how the vinyl sits against the trim, but it all comes down to experience and on my next build ill know not to make the same mistake haha. Also if you notice the Tmold substitute does not go all the way around, why i did this i will never know but i wont make the same mistake on my next build haha

If you're looking for a great example of KADE Xbox wiring, check out Floriske.nl's build thread here.

He did such a nice job that the KADE team used his panel as an example on their Wiring Guide.

Use velcro cable wraps (preferred because you can easily loosen/tighten them as needed) or loose zip-ties to keep the bundles neat while wiring the panel -- replace the velcro wraps with zip ties once everything is just right.

Wire one switch at a time starting with the one farthest from the encoder.

Pay attention to any bends/twists in the wire -- if possible, smooth them out before you start.

If you're using pre-crimped wires, start at the switch and thread your way back to the encoder, cut the wire to length, strip it and connect to the encoder.

If you're using a spool of wire, start with the spool next to the encoder, thread your way to the switch, strip/crimp the QD, cut the wire to length, strip it and connect to the encoder.

Leave enough slack so you can individually disconnect/reconnect the QDs while working on your panel.
