Tidy mounting of small power/hdd LEDs in timber
« on: February 12, 2014, 05:59:27 pm »
Hi,

I have a number of 3mm LEDs that are pre-wired to a motherboard header connection e.g.

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/15117/ele-1043/Tailed_Red_3mm_LED_w_2-Pin_Mobo_Header_Connector_LED-3T-R.html?id=dUSjM6Bz&mv_pc=146

However the unit I am building is from 16mm MDF, and this sort of thing here e.g.

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/1756/ele-04/3mm_LED_Clip.html?id=dUSjM6Bz&mv_pc=155

is for a metal panel.  Routing out that much to make this "clip" in would be too flimsy. And not tidy.

I'm looking for a real nice tidy looking mount, or alternate mounting solution/idea, for a timber panel, without resorting to just using a glue gun or similar.

(This is for a sitdown cocktail. I previously built an upright, and wired a blue hdd led to the top rear so it would flash on the wall behind for hdd activity.  Works exactly as intended, but is just a routed hole, sort of like \/ with the led at the bottom just held with a shonky cable clip, and is toally bodgey i.e. not tidy. Even though it's not visible that messy hole bothers me!)

I'm not 100% sure I understand what you want to do. But, are you looking for something like an LED Lens that you can mount into the wood and put the actual LED behind it? Or are you looking for something that will hold/grip the LED?

I was thinking an LED Lens? For example:

Sounds like you need an led bezel. Do a search and you should find what you need - there's hundreds of them on eBay and they can usually be push mounted into wood if the hole is drilled to the right size.

Edit - didn't see your link the first time. I've used a similar one and it mounted fine  :)

Thanks guys!

@markc74 LED Bezel! I will try what I have in a dummy piece, but have also found some better ones with a longer shaft, now I now what they're called. Gonna buy these and see how they look and grip in timber.

@lamprey LED Lens!  I had no idea about these but I like it. Was umming and ahhing about having the LED just sticking out without a diffuser of some sort.  Gonna get some Cliplite 3mm clear lenses and compare.

Thanks again, was hard to work out without really knowing what I needed.
