"Just wondering" on an artwork matter

There are things I have learned about this hobby, and things I don't know yet, so if I am repeating something that has been repeated tons of times before, please forgive me, and just point me in the right direction.

I know people have come up with front ends to try and show the games off better while navigating menus and things like that, and I was thinking about current horizontal monitors and mostly vertical old games ... did anybody ever come up with either a version of MAME or a front end that can use that extra side space to display artwork for the current game being played on the sides? Just seems like an interesting concept.

Mr. Do has some  horizontal-mounted widescreen layouts (step-by-step directions here) and MAMELayPlus is a version of MAME that has  horizontal-mounted and vertical-mounted  widescreen layouts.
