Quick computer question(OT!!)
« on: November 27, 2003, 10:08:47 pm »
I can have a cdrw and a dvd+rw on the same IDE port?
The board only has 2 IDE ports.

Now I got a cdrw and 2 HDs.
Can I put the cdrw on slave and the dvdr+w on master ???
(or the other way around)

I'm 98% sure you can do that. I have it setup like that on my main PC, no problems whatsoever.

it doesnt really matter what you set as master/slave, although with 2 hard drives, and 2 optical drives, your ideal setup would be a hard drive and optical drive on both of the IDE channels with the hard drives being the master and the optical drives being the slave.

Ok, I started writing a tutorial for you but it got kinda long so I didn't.  But if you or anyone want it as a reference I'll be glad to post it.

For your situation, personally I would just put the Dvd drive as master on the secondary channel(Second Port).  It can burn Cds and depending on your power supply would help with all that. Four drives is a lot of juice.  If you want to use both I would put the DVD as master on the secondary channel and the CDRW as slave on the secondary chanel.

Agreed,  IIRC if you mix up HDD's and CDR's it's possible to slow down your hard drive.  I know for sure that if you have a fast and slow drive on a single IDE cable, they both go at the slow drive's speed.

For what it's worth.  You shouldn't have any problems with what you're talking about though.

actually "mixing" hard drives and optical drives does the exact opposite of what you said slycrel.

By putting the two hard drives on two seperate IDE channels, you allow each drive to have a max amount of the IDE channel's bandwith. Therefore, whenever you have to transfer data from one drive to another, or when programs are being accessed from both drives, you are not bogging down one IDE channel with both hard drives. It is a much better option to put one hard drive and one optical drive on an IDE channel whenever possible.

As far as four drives using too much juice, I don't think that carries much weight. For a normal system, you can run 4 drives and everything else on a 350watt PSU with no problems, and 350 is about the minimum these days if a system is anywhere near new. Maybe worry about that SNAAAKE if you are on an older system with a very small PSU (300w or under) but otherwise, there is no way that those drives are taking up too much power.

Also SNAAAKE, you may want to consider a Lite On dvd burner.

NewEgg has a 4x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 40x CDR, 24x CDRW for only 95 bux, 103 if you want a beige drive. Click the link below and scroll to the products that are 95 and 103 respectively for more info. They are very good drives and quite a bit faster than the one you posted.

Sorry, you are right.  The first portion of what I said was wrong (I don't remember for sure on that one), but the second half was right -- I just wasn't clear.  You don't want to put two HDD's on the same cable or you'll have issues.  Apologies for the confusion.

hahahaha @ that article.  People in this country just aren't happy unless they are complaining about the latest "injustice." I got a good laugh out of the article tho, so thanks.

and glad I could help with the hard drives, it's what happens \when you build too many computers heh. I'm up to 12 or so I think now.... you just kinda learn these things as you go along.
