Can't launch ROMs from MALA but can from MAMEUI (SOLVED)

Hi I'm pretty new to MAME but I've got MAMEUI 64 working, so I can launch ROMs like 1942 from there.
But trying to launch the same ROM from MALA outputs this error. (attempting to launch the clones has a similar error but with a different ROM name after "tried in")
I get the same error from every ROM I've tried, they can be launched form MAME but not MALA

The image attached shows my MALA settings and my ROM locations. (also the contents of the 1942 ROM, the files aren't missing)
So what obvious thing am I doing wrong?

EDIT: Looks like you don't have the mame executable in the same folder as the roms folder.
MAME assumes the roms folder is located in the same folder it is unless you change it in mame.ini
MAMEUI and MAME can live in the same folder together without issues.

while in Mala, highlight 1942 in your gamelist, right click, and select "show game metadata"
Check the path there.  All the data is stored in the gamelist so whenever you make changes, you have to refresh the gamelist.

If that doesn't lead to a solution, post a pick of the metadata.

odd that it says "tried in 1942 1942" instead of just "tried in 1942"

Oh brilliant!
The ROMs folder was one level up from the MAME executable. I moved it into the MAME folder and now everything is working.
