List of 4-way vertical games
« on: November 25, 2003, 01:08:49 pm »
What's the easiest way to get a list of all vertical 4-way or 2-way joystick games with 1-2 buttons?

I'm converting a space invaders cocktail to a Mame system and I'd like to make it a simpler version than my other Mame.  I'd like to set it up with a small number of classic games, probably the top 25 games that fit the above description.  I haven't decided if I want to add a 2nd button to each control panel (it depends on how many and which extra games I can get out of the extra button).

Thanks,
Wade

You could use Sortinfo to get this information from Mame's listinfo pretty easily (thats what I use to generate the vertical rom sorting batch files I put together). Take a look here:

Thanks!  I thought there was something like that but had never used it and couldn't remember what it was called.

I should probably make some more sorters for 4-way/8-way/1-button/2button/3button etc. and put them on the site. I'll see if I can get them together tonight.

I'd be handy if the list was available on the web in a sortable database format. Not an overly difficult task with PHP and MySQL but would take some work.

SOMEWHERE on this messageboard there is a thread called "The definitive 4-way vertical list" or something like this. I weeded through the entire vertical gamelist manually and pulled out all the ORIGINAL 4-way games. So much bad info in sortinfo that it can't be trusted. Plus they list all the 2-way games as 8-way, so that is useless.

If you can't find the thread then I GUESS I could reproduce the list from the romlist on my Artic Mini.

Thanks Paige!  I tried sortinfo and chopped out a lot of games but realized that some were missing (8-way, presumably) and there were still lots of clones and hacks.  This list looks much better.

Thanks again!

It's unfortunate that the controls information in listinfo is inaccurate in so many places. Hopefully the controls.dat project will eventually get everything ironed out in it. Almost all of  the games in Paige's list have already been documented in controls.dat, maybe soon the Mame source will be cleaned up a little with it?

Great utility joy monkey!  I was wondering though, is there a way to search by genre?  In mame32 you can generate a list based on what type of games and was wondering if there was a command to do that with your prog.  My goal is to delete every single mahjong and puzzle game.  Thanks!
its better to not post and be thought a fool, then to whip out your keyboard and remove all doubt...

Thanks for the list...I was just thinking today that I would like to see what games are 4-way Vertical vs. 4-way Horizontal and vs. 8-way whatever. I'm still trying to decide if my first MAME machine is going to be a "classics" only thing, or if I want to make sure I can play EVERYTHING on it. I'm thinking everything, but this is still a handy list to have!

There are lots of rom sorting tools. There is even one that I can't remember the name of right now that can delete/rename/remove (your option) the roms and all their related files like screenshots. flyers, artwork and the like based on filters.
