Two gamepads, two sets of buttons, and four times the headache.
« on: November 26, 2013, 08:35:28 am »
Hi everyone,
This is beyond my scope of understanding, and I googled the hell out of it, to find nothing concrete.

The issue is, I have two gamepad controllers for my PC. First one is a Logitech Dual Action, and the second is a SteelSeries 3GC.

The button layout on the Logitech reads 1,2,3,4 starting from the left and going counterclockwise.
The button layout on the SteelSeries reads 4,3,2,1 starting from the left and going counterclockwise.

The shoulder buttons are reversed, where 5 and 6 are on the top in the Logitech, and 5 and 6 are on the bottom on the SteelSeries.

What I want to do is redefine the buttons on the Steelseries to match my layout for the Logitech. The reason is for games like MK9, Injustice, and SF4, where the game shows you the keypresses, it gets really confusing to my muscle memory. Basically, I want the left button on each controller to be Button1, top button to be Button4, etc. Does that make sense?

I've looked everywhere online, and couldnt find a way to remap the actual buttons on the gamepad to coincide with the button in the Control Panel config. I have Xpadder, and it works somewhat with keyboard input mapped to the Steelseries, but ideally I want the controllers to match each other on the hardware level.

If this is possible, please let me know. If not, then I'll go out and buy a Logitech that has the same layout and write off the Steelseries purchase. Just wanted to cover all of my bases before making that last move.

Thanks so much for any help or insight you guys can provide.

I had an AHK (auto hot key) idea up until you said hardware level. how much is another controller if that's an option?

Well in all honesty I dropped 20$ on the Steelseries, and the Logitech they have at Best Buy is 25$. So I'd be out 50$ if I can't get this going. I'd be willing to hear about your AHK idea though. I'm not too savvy with AHK code but understand the basics.

Buy a second Logitech.

You'll spend a ton of time getting everything sync'd up - and they're still "different" game pads.   In fighting games each player should have identical controls so one cannot claim that the controls are the problem.

$25 is worth not having to deal with scripts and hack programs.

I figured as much. I just wanted to exhaust all possible options. I didn't think it would've been a PITA to remap a controller. Thanks!

I'd agree easiest method would be just buy another dual action but not from Best Buy unless you get them to price match Walmart for $16.84 ( http://www.walmart.com/ip/Logitech-Dual-Action-Game-Pad-PC/3504720 )

NOT AVAILABLE.  :)

Isn't that one disconntinued?   I have a pair of Logitech F310s myself that work perfect on everything.  (and an F710 that Logitech claims is Windows 8 compatible - its not.  they lie.  It works in 8 if you install Xbox 360 drivers, doesn't work at all in 8.1)

So I bit the bullet and bought the Logitech F310. Thankfully the buttons are the same as my Dual Action. Now everything works as expected, and I saved myself a huge headache. Thanks for all the help! Stay away from the SteelSeries 3GC. Pain in the A** to work with.

You could always find some cheap wired Xbox 360 controllers or PS2/3 controllers and use them to. Xbox you just need to download the driver and it will plug right in.

The AHK scripts will work but they wont feel right especially if you are playing games like mk9 or SF. Let me know if you want to try just for laughs though. Its always good to know how to.

I was going to suggest this:  http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,96377.0.html

You can download the xInput (x360ce program in a sense) from the BYOAC file depository here:  http://files.arcadecontrols.com/details.php?image_id=3656

It has support for remapping X360 stuff in games to your joysticks.

You can also google x360ce to grab it.
