I have seen some people make grooves or cut out a space for the joystick base under the control panel top, is this necessary? or is it ok to just screw it in?

It all depends on the joystick and how high you want the top to sit.
Joystick mounting is more personal preference.

Just beware about screwing it right into the wood or mdf with regular wood screws. It may rip out on you over time.
Your best off using carriage bolts and nuts or maybe inserts and screws if you want the hardware hidden.

They are Happ competition joysticks, ahhh I completely forgot about the carriage bolts.
Ill look into the threaded inserts.
