Where the diodes come into play is if you want to wire more buttons than the key-wiz has inputs.
It's possible to make a matrix where pressing a single button will trigger both the shazaam key and one of the other keys, therefore posting the alternate key output. Since multiple buttons are connected to the same inputs, the diodes are required to keep the signal from backtracking through the wiring and screwing up the other input. (they are like one way streets)
If all you want to do is use it as a shift function, wire it like any other button like Randy said.
Do that, hold the shazaam button and another button and you get the alternate key output.
