ultrastik 360's not working
« on: November 14, 2013, 10:10:03 am »
hello i have 2 ultimarc ultrastik 360 and cant get them to be recognized, in the usb it says code10 cant start, i have tried bios settings, plugging them into my laptop, unistall and update drivers, everthing else i plug into the usb port works-mouse speakers, and wireless usb adapter, etc., i thought that as soon as u plugged them in they would show up in the game contollers but they dont and when i try add custom controller it says game port not configured, i have a mame (not sure which version there are several installed it was custom built 7 years ago and he is not around) and it uses a gameex front end. how i got to this is my hard drive crashed and he built one for my friend with different motherboard and joysticks, trackball and different button config, so i got the same board he has and copied hard drive because we had the same games and didnt want to mess with programming or finding roms, anyway i got the system to come up and thought i would only have to deal with buttons and joysticks, which seems to be the case, but it works with my keyboard plugged into it to get to the menus and the led's are on on the joysticks, ive been talking with andy from ultimarc but have seen some good responses to similiar problems and was hoping to get help without starting from scratch, thanks

Have you tried emailing Andy @ Ultimarc for help?

http://ultimarc.com/

He usually responds pretty quick.

yes we've been tring to figure it out and he is sending me new boards but thought if it was a windows xp issue with a card or assigning id or IRQ conflict i could try those first, ive been googling everything i can think of, as im finally getting back to try and do this since the game has been down for a year and a half and the kids are driving me nuts about fixing it

I was having the same issue.  Turned out I was plugging them into a hub and with other devices plugged-in, the hub was not able to supply full voltage to the u360's.  Plugging directly into the motherboard did the trick.

How could I tell?  When the PC was off, the led's on the U360's would light up, but once the systems was powered on, the lights would go out.  I surmised the hub couldn't power everything plugged-in or the U360's need a full 5v@500ma with tight tolerances.

Your board may not be supplying a full 5v@500ma, most devices can work with lower power.

Try plugging the u360's into another PC\laptop and see if they show up.  You could try getting a good hub that can output 5v@500ma on all ports.  A USB 3.0 hub should do the trick, even when running at in 1.1 or 2.0 compatibility modes.

Using multiple USB devices on hubs can be tricky. I've run into all manner of issues.

One thing to be VERY certain about is whether you have a powered hub or not. Make sure they're powered.

but that's not all.

Say you have a 7 port hub. and the PS that came with it says 1amp. that's 1000ma split across 7ports, or 142ma per port. Subtract out whatever draw is required by the hub itself and you come up with a number that’s significantly less than what would be required to drive ALL the ports at the full 500ma. Therefore, some of those devices may end up starved.

I have issues with the U360s, my USB trackballs, even my flightstick because of current starvation like this. Just be sure to get GOOD powered hubs with beefy power supplies and you should be good.

okay so last night i plugged them into my HP dv7 laptop on the right side assuming those were 2.0 hubs and same thing occured no communication code 10 cant start then i plugged them into the left side 3.0 high speed i thing and they came up in game controllers finally as a hid compliant controller, so im talking with andy from ultimarc to upgrade the firmware from my laptop, or sending them to him and he will test and upgrade them, as far as how to make my ports 3.0 or high speed or dedicated, what can i buy to make that happen it says they are powered hubs and each stick is 100mA of 500 and voltage was 4.94 i saw in the bios i think, i know they make a booster or something along those lines if someone knows a good brand to look at, thanks

You'd have to buy a daughter board with USB30 ports on it if the MOBO doesn't already have USB3.

Something like this

That's very strange. as far as I know, those sticks should work just fine in a USB 1.0 port. Andy will definitely be your best bet for that kind of problem. Maybe there is something up with the firmware on those particular sticks.

I have 3 x U360 connected to different computers with USB1.1, 2.0 & 3.0

All work fine. So it is not a problem with USB speed. Maybe it is a power problem. I also guess that you tried changing the joystick IDs.

As for firmware updates, you don't have to send them to Andy as you can download the Ultramap utility and do it yourself.

i think its a power issue I plugged them into my laptop on usb3.0 and upgraded the firmware and assigned id's and tested joysticks and buttons, worked fine and they showed up in game controllers, my mame and game ex settings are enabled for joystick and then plugged them in on my laptop in the 2.0usb and it still said code 10 cant start and wouldn't recognize so I bought a 3.0 adapter to install in the mame cab on the motherboard and we'll see what happens hopefully someone can figure this out I know they work on 1.1 and 2.0 but just not on mine

They will definitely not work on an USB 1.0 port. USB 1.1 and higher is OK.

ok i got my stiks working and tested in game controllers with the vantec usb pcie card, still not sure why wont work on any 2.0 but andy has been great help with this and thanks to you guys for the suggestions, now with the game ex front end they and the buttons will work to select game and move up and down but when i select a game and it goes into mame, they stop working and when i exit back out of the game only player 2 joystick works i know you hit tab in the game to configure but isnt there a way to program every console or arcade mode the same instead of setting buttons for thousands of games individually? i will also start a post as i think it involves the front end forum, as for programming the sticks with ultra map i thought i had seen someone had written a program to map in anlog mode for the swithching automatically, again instead of programming individual, the stiks these replaced were sliksticks i think and i see something about gp wiz or raw 49 way in my task manager that is always running with game ex, thanks alot
