What's the best size HDTV for MAME Pedestal?
« on: November 11, 2013, 12:03:14 pm »
Hey guys...as I wait for my SF II Champion Edition Mame Pedestal to arrive, I'm curious what size TV you guys recommend using?  Place that's building it said I could use a 50" TV and have the Pedestal pushed right underneath it.  Anything larger than 50" they recommend pushing the pedestal back 1-3 feet.

Should I also mount the TV so I can move it Horizontal and Vertical?  Do any brackets allow this but still keep the TV really flush with the wall?

I use a 32" with a golden tee panel and the players eyes during game play end up being about 40" from the display. At that distance it's comfortable and easy on the eyes, plus I'm glad I skipped the 37" that the little devil on my shoulder was telling me to get as it would have been to big to be that close. I think you need to head to Best Buy or B&H with a tape measure and stand 3' from a 50" tv and judge it for yourself. Imho with a 50" the players eyes or the front of the panel would need to be about 48" or more away from the screen.

good day.

I agree with chopper.... I would test for yourself and measure out the distance that is comfortable for you.  It sounds crazy to me to have a 50" TV with the players that close (assuming that you pushed the pedestal right underneath it).  Players would have to move their heads around to see everything happening on the screen, which would get annoying really quickly.

So once again, we find that evil of the past seeps into the present like salad dressing through cheap wax paper, mixing memory and desire.

I have a 29" tv that rotates and a pedestal design. I love the rotation, because it makes vertical games look great.

You also need to consider that when the TV is in vertical position, that the edge of the tv clears the top of the pedestal (so that the pedestal doens't cover up part of the screen). You can also have the pedestal so that its not flush with the wall and not worry about clearance.

The tv support that I'm using sticks out 3 inches from the wall and a total of 6 inches with the tv included.

I used to run a pedestal in front of my 42" plasma before it crapped out on me (arrrgh, bought it back when that sort of thing was actually really expensive).

I don't think you are really going to gain anything going any larger than that. Once you go bigger you just have to back the pedestal up more and the games don't have enough detail to make that worthwhile.

Aspect ratio is a real issue with basically every display you can get these days since they are all 16:9 and every game you ever want to play is 4:3.
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

I have a 47" and it seems to be the perfect size to me. I set the games up to be the size they were in their original cabinets and then use the rest of the space for artwork.

I have a 42" wall mounted lcd for my 4 player pedestal and I have to have the front of the pedestal about 30" or so from the wall in order for it not to be too close.  I wouldn't want it any larger than that.
