3D Monitor
« on: October 25, 2013, 02:36:26 pm »
I am just in the initial planning phase of my build and I am curious if anyone is running a 3D LCD? I have been thinking about putting a 3D Passive LCD in my future build. If you are, do you use the 3D much? Does it add to the gaming experience?

i'm going to say no.

I occasionally run 3D on my computer and to be quite honest, it's not real great unless you go active.  You have a real tough time keeping a decent framerate. you essentially need at least 60 FPS for decent gameplay. but your system needs to multiply this by 2 for an active setup. being able to maintain 120 FPS is a little hard without dumping a ton of cash into videocards. people have said 30 FPS is fine, (interleaved 60 fps) but i find it ridiculously stuttery (if that's a word).

It can be. I found a research paper (I've since lost it) dating from sometime in the 40's that addresses the idea of frame rate (it wasn't called as such back then). It determined that the human eye has a lower threshold where it begins to blend still images into a moving one and an upper threshold where the human eye is unable to distinguish individual still images at 1/200 of a second.

Those thresholds aren't the same for everyone. That's why you have boobs who think 30fps is fine but you can see the jittery or stuttering. It's the same reason why I think we're getting shafted on Bluray.Same reason why some TV manufacturers saw it necessary to build 120Hz TVs. Took me a long time to get used to that crap. Still pisses me off when I think about it.

I have a 120hz LED LCD TV. (that's a lot of acronyms)

People come over and see my tv and they are all like "this doesn't look right...what's up with the TV?! it looks funny!"

it's because it refreshes 120 frames a second. you aren't used to having ALL the frames put in for you. your brain doesn't know what to think of it.

Ive had people go so far as to say it looks fake  :laugh2:

I love running my TV in 120hz. Makes everything look like a play on PBS.

I hate 120hz TV's, it looks like everything is on PBS. Let my idiot brain fill in the blanks, don't tell it what it's missing!

IRT lilshawn. Those aren't frames though. All the TV is doing is interpolating the previous frame with the next to make the "missing" frame.

Think about what's happening if the video source is just 24p or 25i. A lot of Blu-rays come that way.

In a nutshell, you've got ---smurfy--- candy or candied ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---.

IRT to everyone else.

Seriously, I don't get the PBS quip. Isn't that what Sesame Street is on?

i find people find it most pronounced if i stream video from my computer. The video is set to 1080p @ 72hz which is a pulldown of 24 and still multiplies into 120 easily. so with all the processing that happens there is surprisingly little "lag" to the screen. (about 20 milliseconds at most). I've never tested the "game" mode.

I meant my PBS quip as a compliment.
