hotrod vs. keyboard
« on: March 25, 2002, 10:40:33 am »
Hey everybody!  Got some more questions for ya!  I'm going to run, more than likely mame32 on my cabinet.  I was curious if there is a button on the hotrod that is used for the exit key, or if it comes with software that you can map it to that?  Or do I have to do a keyboard hack just so I can have an exit?  Also can you also map a button to insert a coin?  thanks!

The hotrod has the ESC button on the controller but it is not wired to a button.

To give a text desc. The hotrod has 4 main connectors on the interface.   Each has 8 wires except the last connector. On connector 4 are only 2 buttons "x" and "[". on pins 1 and 2 the other pins are

Connector 4
Pin 3 ESC       QUIT
Pin 4 ENTER   ?
Pin 5 Tab        Menu
Pin 6 F1          ?
Pin 7 F2          Service
pin 8 p            Pause

All you have to do is extend the common ground to the other side of the button and you can implement any of these buttons on your Hot Rod.

Hope that helps.
Bob

Like said before, hotrod does not have an exit key, but you can a map the games to exit only when multiple keys are pressed, say p1 coin & p1 start & p2 coin buttons pressed at the same time ==> exit the game.

Hotrod has 2 buttons that insert coins already.

btw, if you are building a cabinet...

do you own the hotrod already?

if not, it's not the best solution at all.  Not configurable, expensive, purple (well that would be a good thing for my daughter).

Look at an ipac and buying the components from a company like www.videoconnect.com or some of the other cheaper then happs for happs parts company.

You will save over 100 bucks by doing this.
ipac is about 40
2 super or compitition happs 20
20 buttons 20

80 bucks and the wood

No I don't already have a hot rod but I'm kinda scared about the whole keyboard hacking interfaces.  I am fairly knowledged in wiring and everything but Im not a computer I/O genius by any means.  Which of the keyboard hack have the best instructions?  I would want to have really detailed instructions if I do it myself. thanks for all the info everybody!
