MDF spray paint
« on: October 07, 2013, 08:45:09 am »
I've seen a few threads here about painting MDF - mostly to use oil based primer - paint.

I was thinking for my Control Panel if I can use regula,r or some special spray paint that will work just fine?

Thanks

Oil based primer isn't necessary for MDF.  I've used Kilz latex primer with great results, but did use an oil based paint on the finish coat.  If you give it a nice thick coat of Kilz, sand it smooth, and repeat, then spray paint will do fine.  Spray paint for primer may not be the best choice for bare MDF, due to how much it can absorb.  But a number of coats with a good automotive, primer with sanding in-between, will probably be ok as well.  You just need to make sure that it's well sealed and smooth when you're done.

Thanks for the tip Randy.  Hmm, I didn't think one could mix between the 2 mediums: ie. latex primer per se, then oil paint.

On the last project where I spray painted MDF, I used rustoleum high build sandable primer from the automotive section of walmart.
Like randy said, the mdf soaks it up.  You have to keep doing coats until you see nothing but evenly colored smooth primer.
If you can still see anything through it, it needs more coats.  It might take an entire can for your CP depending on the size of your CP.

I've done a 50/50 mix of Titebond and water as a sealant.  Shellac also works very well.  Two coats of both, light sand and then you can paint to your hearts desire.

I'm using a similar method. But with a wood sealer.

Should be starting my first cote of paint Friday. Heres my build if you want to check in to see how it works out.
