How to set MA to ignore bad roms?
« on: October 06, 2013, 04:24:45 pm »
Hi,

I have about 10K of roms but only 2600 of them are actually good (I'm using Mame UI 0.150).
The problem is that when MA present me with the list of games it also display the bad ones (and when clicking ...you I get the missing roms err msg)

My Q is: How do I configure MA to display the good roms only?

Thanks

yotsuya

Take the bad roms out of the Rom folder?

I thought about it and also used RomCenter in order to delete the bad ones but when doing so I got a message that some of the roms will not work (I guess because they are split)

Is there a way in MA to ignore the bad ones?

I was basically trying to do the same thing, just asked different  :) Here but was hoping to have a list of working games. I made a faves folder in MA and put all working games into that, will do for now.

How did you do that (Manually or Automatically)?

In MA Preferences, go to Options, then MAME, then check "disable unplayable roms (using MAME data)"

Don't forget to click "Force rescan of media folder" under the Scan sub-tab under Configuration

Oh, now I know what you mean. The filter works and eliminates most of the non-working games, but some of the games left over still won't load properly, right? Yeah, I went through and ported all the games that I wanted that were working to the Favorites list.

Did you do it manually or is there an auto way to do so?
In addition I also set the MA screensaver and I guess that your trick will not help there (it will still load bad roms when in screen saver mode)

I did it manually, but it was very easy. I assigned the pinball buttons on the side of my cab to add and delete games to and from Favorites, so AFTER I used the "disable unplayable" filter I went through all the games and added just the ones I wanted to my Favorite list. Then, if for some reason a game on my Favorite list wouldn't load or was otherwise unplayable, I just hit the other pinball button to remove it from my Favorite list. Probably took me 30 min from start to finish.

Thanks, Sounds good.
I tried a different idea...I unmerged all Roms and deleted the bad ones (used RomCenter for that) but it didn't work.

Although this might not be the right forum to ask...I'm using MameUI64 and I have noticed on the side menu (the filters) that there is (among others) an "Available" filter and a "Working" filter My question is: whats the difference between the two? cause with the "Working" filter I see bad Roms but the "Available" filters only the good ones?

Sorry been away so not logged in since my last reply. I added them manually as dcpmark did. Although I still have lots to add, I think im upto H at the moment  :) I just add some each time I use the system rather than sit and add them all at once.
I have been checking each one actually loads before adding to faves so usually end up playing some for a while and get side tracked. It is a bit of a task but once I have my full list done I know I have a good version as such without it being bloated with broken roms. Im using 0.143 and got romset the same.
I'm very green at all this myself as I'd assumed roms would just work with any version so it was a big learning curve for me.
I did use romcenter at one point and totally messed everything up so you seem to know more than me.
I think the "available" is supposed to be the actual roms in your rom folder and "working" from what I understand can show different results depending on mame version even with the same romset..like my defender rom works in one pc but same rom will not work on 2nd pc as mame is older version.Hope that makes sense...sorry to waffle on. :-[
