ServoStik Questions
« on: October 06, 2013, 01:59:03 pm »
Just some quick questions about the ServoStik joystick I was hoping someone could help me with...

1.  If I an using a 5/8" thick MDF board for the control panel, could I under mount these joysticks?  Or would I have to mount them on the top and route out the area for the mounting plate to sit on?  I didn't know if there were a longer shaft I would need or something, if that's even available?

2.  Regardless of which method I would have to mount these, are there other balltop options out there that would be compatible?  Ultimarc only seems to have the red balltop and then two oval tops.   Ideally I would like a blue balltop but again, I just don't have a good understanding of which sticks/shafts might be compatible, if any.   I might be interested in an illuminated joystick too, if those are available.  So if anyone could help point me to the different sticks that would work, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Depends on the over all height that you prefer. On my SI ptII cocktail they are mounted to non routed 1/2" plywood, the plastic control panel cup and the aluminum cpo which totals to about 3/4" and imo they end up at the perfect height for that purpose. You'll just have to make that call when you have one in hand.

For the custom balltop route I think you only have 1 option.  http://www.paradisearcadeshop.com/hollow-shafts/733-magstik-10mm-stainless-steel-hollow-joystick-shaft.html

Thanks for the info.  So a servostik uses the same shaft as a magstik plus?

Derp!!! Got my ultimarc sticks mixed up :P. The balltop on the servostik unscrews and has an M6 thread (The balltop on the magstik does not unscrew) and that's where I confused myself.

good day.

Sorry I don't know these details yet.  Is M6 a common thread or something?  I thought I read the servostiks are like JLWs, so does that mean I could use something like this?

The servo stick is a modified jlw, there are lots of ball top options...I used the handcandy ball tops from groovygamegear on my JLW sticks and they are really nice. I under mounted mine in 3/4" mdf with 1/8" plexi on top. I used a router to recess then about half the thickness of the mdf, I think the height of them is perfect this way.

Thanks for the info!   I did actually hear back from Andy today at Ultimarc as well.  He said this:

"The shaft is standard Sanwa JLW which has a 6mm thread. So standard ball tops from other suppliers can be used"

So it sounds like I should be able to find a hollow stick from Paradise Arcade if I decide to go with a LED joystick.  Otherwise, I could just seemingly find a balltop from Paradise or GGG (and I'm sure other sites) as well!   So I think I'm all set on this topic.  Thanks for the help everyone!
