Opinion- how much should I care about this (re: cocktail glass)
« on: September 27, 2013, 10:09:20 pm »
OK, need opinions on this:

Went to a local glass shop to get a glass top for a cocktail I am building. Had everything I wanted written down for them. Aside from not offering a tint dark enough for my liking, the glass came out great. Got it home, realized it had a some info etched into one of the corners (tiny logo, tempered glass, ANSI information, etc.). Probably whole etched area is like 3/4" x 1/2" and will not be covered by the cocktail clips, and I am planning on black underneath so no art to hide it.

So, worth making a fuss over? Glass was $100 (which felt high although I have nothing to compare it to) and I left the shop with my specifications that said "no logos/printing on glass," and had indicated that it was for a table top. Basic online research indicates that getting glass without the etched info can be done.

What would you do? Roll with it or make a return? Anybody have a similar experience with a "watermark" on their cocktail glass?

If I was planning on going back for more, I might mention it. If it's a one time thing, I don't think I'd complain. Maybe that's just me, though.

Looks to be small enough and located close to the corner so it shouldn't interfere with anything - so I wouldn't worry about it ( On the bright side if it ever breaks you'll know what to order for replacement ! )

I would go back and complain about it, especially if you wrote it down.

Then I would do one of 2 things:
1)  Get them do it over without the logo.
OR
2)  Work out a discounted price on the existing glass with the logo (which will save both of you money).

The second option would only be if you can live with the logo.  (perhaps mount it face down and use a sharpie to black it out?)

Either way, you paid for a product that you didn't get.  Chances are, they will go for option # 2, since option # 1 will cost them more money.

Absolutely agree with Delusional.  My guess though is that you would prefer the replacement piece.  No matter how much they discount it, you'll still have the less than perfect piece and you'll never forget it.

You don't have to approach it as a complaint.  Just simply return with an 'Aww, I just noticed you guys etched the glass, but it shouldn't have been.  How soon can I have a new piece made withiut the etching?'

They'll recognize their mistake and right their wrong.  I'm sure they do it all the time.

And...if you feel you might consider a 2nd build for a friend...then maybe offer something low for the mistake piece.

Yeah, I am using a beat up Atari Cocktail as a template so it is a match for Atari glass.

OK, thanks for the thoughts, the glass place is closed over the weekend but I think I will ask for a refund or new peice on Monday. Hopefully it goes well. Bah, the same glass online is $85 shipped. Should have done my research.

Damn! Where's that place?! My first (and only) online search showed a price of $571.76 even before they asked where they were shipping it to.

Yeah, OneDayGlass. No experience with them but the cost is cheaper than the local shops- although the tint might be less dark than what the local shops offer (I just kind of assumed you could get any percentage of tint originally).

It's a nice deal, really. (I didn't find an option to cut the radius into the corners, mind you.) I have a glass place on the corner, so the shipping price is a bit prohibitive for me. Being in Canada, it was $87, which cost more than the actual glass.

Regarding the etching, it's the kite mark to show the glass is indeed toughened glass. I can't speak for every glass supplier but the two that I use on a daily basis will not supply a piece of toughened glass without the stamp as I have asked for this myself before.

That's understandable. It may be a law in some locations. The aforementioned OneDayGlass does offer "no etching" as an option, however, so it's possible that it's not an issue for them.

In my experience when you get tinted/tempered glass for a game from a local shop they usually actually order it from someplace else anyway and then hand it to you.

Wow, you're right, there was no place to specify radius at One Day Glass... hmm..

You need to choose "Rounded Corner(s)" for the shape instead of "Square/Rectangle", then you can specify the radius, and which corners it applies to.

This is absolutely the case... the guy said as much and made sure I knew "he didn't make any money on it." Seemed like an odd thing to share.

:banghead: Thanks! Good to know I can still use online as a backup if I can't get it made right at the local place.

That last part is code for "I hope you're happy with it, when you get it, because I'm not going to do anything to help you if it's wrong." At least, that's always been the case when I've come up against that comment. It's usually untrue, of course, but said when people think they're being shortchanged somehow. (Which is odd, in and of itself, since I'm pretty sure they're the ones setting the prices.)

That sounds about right. Hopefully the shop guy will take some responsibility in my case... is there a fingers-crossed emoticon?

I think in the UK by law they have to mark the glass when it has been toughened. However you can ask for a 'furniture mark' which is smaller, basically just a numeric code.

I know this doesn't help you, but you want to get some done again you should request the furniture mark.

Being that you accepted the glass and 3 days have gone by they might not do a thing.

Good news, actually. Been talking on email the last couple of days and the shop is going to give me a replacement. I looked again on One Day Glass and with rounded corners there is only a $5-ish difference after shipping between them and the local shop, so I think that is the route I'll take. Was very happy I did not receive any push back, not what i expected at all. Maybe I can sweet talk them into letting me keep the other piece cheap/free for another future project.

Alright, today I got the replacement glass in hand. Never got any discounts or anything, but I am ok with that. Return was no problem, only had to wait for the new piece to be made. And now I have some knowledge for the next time I need glass.

Now nothing keeping me from finishing this cocktail but general laziness!

Attached a pic of the new glass sitting atop the old (offset to show the tint)...
