Playing Tron - PC Joystick?
« on: September 18, 2013, 09:08:04 am »
In the process of building a new CP, I am going to put in a spinner for Arkonoid, and thought of also using it for Tron.  I don't want to go to the extreme of obtaining an original Tron joystick and mounting it on my CP, so I was thinking if anyone here has used a USB or wireless PC joystick/flight stick for playing games like Tron or Gorf.

I'm thinking that for such games, I'd be be able to suction cup, or somehow temporary secure the joystick to my Control Panel and remove when I"m done.

Not sure if there'll be any configuration and conflict issues: how would the spinner map in unison with the joystick

Am I mad, or is this completely sane? :)

Well, you are only half mad.

You DON'T want a PC flight stick. Those are analog and Tron is quite digital.

The big stick isn't really required for Gorf and the cocktail one didn't even have it.

You are better off getting any actual arcade top fire stick for tron than you are a PC flightstick. However it doesn't play RIGHT without the original stick, which is an 8-way stick with guides in a shape that kept most of the range to the primary directions and not the diagonals.

If you want something to pull out and put on top of the panel then you want this.

It is 8-way, made by Wico and easily wires up to the encoder you are already using.

However depending on your spinner location you could just swap out one of your sticks for one with a button on the top and solve all your problems (other than the basic fact that Tron isn't that fun once it comes out of the cool cabinet with all the blacklights and such).
Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

Paigeoliver: thanks for the link!  I might just do that.

You're right......I played Tron recently (orginal cab), and with all the lights and stuff, it won't be the same.  Oh well, something is better than nothing....
