Changed opinion on using DHL to Canada
« on: September 11, 2013, 10:46:07 pm »
I have now changed my opinion on using DHL to ship to Canada from outside the country.  I had only been hit for GST and collection once in 3 or 4 shipments but they apparently are now playing the same game as the other carriers such as UPS do.  They charge you duty and GST and horrible collection fees to deliver you parcel that has already been paid for.

My Example

Order 22 dollars

DHL Brokerage Fee  10.00
DHL Collection Fee     4.00
original GST Charged 1.10 < This is what they are collecting for the Canadian Government
New GST since they added 14.00 = 1.10+0.70 = 1.80

So my total charge for them to collect 1.10 for the Government is 15.80

How do you like those numbers?   I shall now bend over again to let the
parcel company do its thing.   :badmood:

I guess the best way now is Post.  At least the Canada Post only charges the GST and duty only if applicable and about $5 to collect.

I've shipped a lot of USPS First Class packages to Canada from the US and never had any issues. It sometimes takes up to ten days, and the weight limit is 13oz, but the service is good. USPS also recently added better tracking, which keeps updating after the package enters Canada.

What I ship though is valued under $30, and lightweight, so the above may not be applicable for your shipments.
