Trackball Issue in Golden Tee on MAME
« on: September 05, 2013, 10:47:50 am »
I have a Tankstick and play a lot of GT.  Occasionally after I play a few rounds the trackball doesn't seem to be as sensitive as it was when I started playing.  This causes problems because the clubs no longer hit as far as they are supposed to.  This is also a problem because you cannot spin the trackball fast enough to apply backspin.  I go to the Windows desktop and use the trackball to move the mouse around and it seems fine there but that is not a good comparison because there's no way to determine if it is moving in sync with the number of RPMs on the trackball.  I restart the computer and it usually doesn't solve the problem.  If I shut it down and come back a day or so later it seems to work fine again.   :dunno.  Is it possible the trackball encoder on the Tankstick is overheating and not registering properly?  Is there a software fix to more accurately sync the trackball to MAME?

This is rather annoying as some friends are talking about a GT league this Fall and I would hate to have to stop short because my trackball is no longer working properly.  Waiting another day to resume is not an option.....please help.

UPDATE  I have been working on this a bit more and might have found something.  I think my track ball might have just needed to be a little tighter.  Last time I cleaned it (about a year ago) I reinstalled it and did so loosely so it could spin very easily.  It may have been too loose and the trackball not making contact with the rollers enough to make them spin.  As to why it only happened after a few games???  ??? who the heck knows.  Maybe some crazy effect from oil on your skin and blah, blah, blah.  Anyways after much grief, my problem might be solved.  I will post results when I know for sure.

I had issues w/ my happ USB trackball too. Tried different mouse drivers,DPI hacks, etc. Finally switched to non USB (arcade harness) and an optiwiz, turned off mouse accellaration in windows and haven't had a problem since. During my research it seems the USB version always has had issues, even the newer red boards.

Mine's not the USB version.  Mine's the original arcade trackball connected via my Hagstrom KE72.

No, green.  I bought it before the red boards came out.   I'll check and see if Mouse Acceleration is turned on or off.  It seems to work OK (not great, but OK) in Marble Madness but it's also slow in Centipede.

You may try adjusting the sensitivity in mame for which ever games are giving issues.

The Spinner Turn Count wiki page has info on trackball settings if you want to set the sensitivity close to the original arcade settings.
