Problems with Rowe CD100A
« on: August 25, 2013, 06:18:08 pm »
I just picked up a real nice complete Rowe CD100A. The only downfall is the machine does not work.
When you turn it on it it clears the RAM screen the goes to Serial 000000ii on the display. The CCC blinks only 2 times on the error LED on startup.
The Keypad doesn't seek to do anything. I pulled it out and checked continuity to check for stuck buttons and everything seems ok.
I also checked the battery on the CCC and it is only reading 1.1 volts.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Brian

from kolv

> Default Rowe CD100 CCC battery fix and error fix
My rowe CD100A started getting all kinds of errors and then wouldnt hold any settings. The problem was the CMOS battery on the CCC module. The battery is a 3v round watch battery that is soldered on the board. Unsolder the battery and remove. Find an old intel pentium computer motherboard (possibly other brands as well) and desolder the cmos battery holder from the motherboard. The prongs on the bottom of the battery holder should line up exactly with the holes on the jukebox CCC board. A standard computer cmos battery just happens to be 3v as well. It works like a charm, and cleared up ALL the errors on my juke. This is also a good preventative measure as well, because the original batteries are old and will start to corrode. <

Even easier, you can get a CR2032 battery holder and CR2032 battery from Radio Shack.  Solder the holder on to the board and just clip the new battery in. Will never have to re-solder another battery in that board again.

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3060977

Good luck

Thanks for the help.
I went to radio shack and put in the new battery and holder. On start up my CCC now blinks 3 times like it suppose to, but my key pad still does not seem to respond.
In normal mode I am now getting serial 000k/gxc
It detects errors in service mode, but I am unable to view them with out the keyboard working.

Any other things to try?

I do have both manuals.
It has a procedure to reset the CCC, but you need to be able to hold down 0 and 1.
I don't see any other info about resets

i thought there was another way to do the master reset ?
if not u need to chk the header plug from the keyboard to the ccc
as a rule we tend to reflow >re-solder< the pin's that lead out of the ccc
as they have been known to cause a wack of strange stuff

ok
lets try this
go to service mode
and see what the keyboard gives u
ie 0-9
now i forget if u need to use the key switch if equipped?
or if it is a slide or a push pull switch?
but my point is once in service,1 of your 2 manuals will have
a trouble shooting guide,with a flow chart
follow it

put the slide switch in service mode
the screen comes up with errors exist

book says:
step one enter service mode (did this)
step 2 type 8  should goto *staus* (does nothing)
none of the keys do anything

I pulled out the CCC and retouched up the joints again..just in case I missed one.
Still no good. I had the battery out while I soldered the joints. I did notice on the first boot up it says installing defaults.
I still have no keyboard and some message on the display about serial blah blah.
If I unplugged the title rack and restart it, the display flashes Rowe, cd Phonograph and play the music. I still don't have any keyboard.

Could the CCC be bad or something else???

Thanks
Brian

I have 8V and 28V at the Display assembly J2
I checked the keyboard Volts. I only get a few keys with 5 volts.
But If I unplug P15, I get 5 volts on all keys   ???

ok
on your unit it is a florsecent display right ?
if so your 8v is converted to 5 volt
plus there is on board bat faiulre  circuit,to detect a bad bat..
the olny way to reset this.. is to reset  the ccc..
to default..u do this by way of a master reset button/switch
if not there will be a jumper on the ccc for it
btw 24 should be 28vdc
i could understand 26=2 volt but 4 as u pointed out
i would want to go into the key board and see if u have a crappy cap or such

Yes I have a digital display.
I have 28 volts, sorry that was a typo. I fixed it in the last post.
When I had the battery out for awhile, put it back in and on boot up the display said loading defaults.
I will look for a switch or jumper on the CCC

Hi Ed,

There is no magic button and if the OP can not get the keyboard to work in service, then all they can do is try it in another jukebox/hidaway so they can errase all the errors etc.

Unlike the earlier R-89 to R-93 CCC with its option to re-install factory defaults I can see no reference in the manuals to do this on CD-100.

Should I try CCC or Digital display board (seems the keyboard connects to this)?

I don't have anyone to swap parts with, so I prob will have to buy them.

I think you can do a factory restore on those. Here is what you do. Put the jukebox into service mode and then turn it off. Hold down the 1 and the 0 on the keyboard and turn the juke box back on. That should load your defaults. I know that works on later models, but I think that worked on 100's. It is worth a shot. It doesn't say that in any manual that I am aware of.

Ok sorta some good news.

After I replaced the CCC and the Display board, I now have a working keyboard with no errors.

Now for the bad... When I goto initialize a cd it seems like the changer is doing it backwards. It puts the cd away than the cd player starts to spin to initialize.
It spins up and  slows down than stops. next it grabs the cd than puts it on top of another. I am doing some thing wrong or do I still have problems?

Thanks
Brian

very common fault of the cd laser its self
if it spins backward's ? as u claim
it means the laser cannot get a foucs on the control track of the cd at all..
all philps cd players do have this same problem..
and i had  many many msn of all
cd style do it
from cmd1-to there pro series
u could try to clean the laser eye
by using a que tip and some isopropo,go very very carefull
as any undue frouce on the laser will make it totaly done

Ed the cd player spins the right way. I can load a cd  and it plays great. it seems the changer is out of sync. it puts a disk in when it should be taking it out.

Ok I found the problem!

Someone before me, had the cam on the CD changer out 180 degrees. Thats why it was putting away the cd than trying to play it.

Right now everything works perfect...Now time to change the thousand burned out light bulbs  :dizzy:

Thanks for all the help guys!
