    • What I'm selling / looking for:

A work of love for the one that humors my madness  :lol

This is the product of two craigslist ads, a lot of patience, and a wife claiming a cabinet for her own in our future arcade. This is my first completed personal project, and as such wanted to wait until I was done before posting. I’m sure most of you have seen your share of Ms-Pacs. This one is slightly different and I hope you enjoy my own custom touches. And for those who can’t wait, here is a quick before and after:

I’ll document the process in the coming posts. Thanks for checking the thread out!

    • What I'm selling / looking for:
Backstory:

CL Ad Photo

Only a week after I got my first cabinet for my personal collection (X-men 6 player) I was able to pick up an original dedicated Ms. Pac. Like most CL ads, stated was working fine when last used. But when I arrived with my trade at his storage unit, we couldn’t power the cabinet on.  :badmood: No matter, I really wanted a 2nd cabinet to work on, and knew the wife likes Ms. Pac-man, so we worked out a deal and I brought it back to the workshop.

At the shop and cleaned up a bit

The Cabinet was in decent structural shape. No water damage or other common “farm fresh” issues. Typical paint and marquee fading, 30+ years of dirt and nicotine stains. But a few really bad gouges and scraps in the side art, enough to sway me from considering keeping the vintage look. The control panel had an orange button added on the left side. Most likely a speed-up button, but the wire lead didn’t go anywhere (previous mod?). Took the PCB out to find a speed up chip installed.

PCB as first removed from cabinet

About this same time a friend of mine also picked up a dedicated MP, his being a cabaret. Since his monitor wasn’t working, we got mine working with his PCB. Unfortunately after much troubleshooting and component replacement (full cap kit, tested with known working daughter-boards / eproms, replaced any failed memory chips) we could not get my PCB to boot. Powers on with random graphical glitches on the screen, does not boot into test menu or game. I still have it now setup as a Pacman board if anyone is interested.

    • What I'm selling / looking for:
The second CL ad explanation:

Around the time I picked up the cabinet, I noticed another CL ad in the same area. This one was advertising a Pac-Man cabinet with all the parts to convert it to a MS. Pac. The owner was moving and didn’t think he would ever get to the project. Ad listed new marquee, new side art, and various other new or spare parts. This would be perfect for the project! A little back and forth online and the seller came around to a trade about a month after my first trip.

Seller wasn’t there when I arrived and his wife only knew to point at the pile of parts in the garage for pickup. Noticed right away either he didn’t know what he was getting into, or just threw a bunch of parts together for a bundle sale. Cabinet was indeed an original Pac-Man shell, painted over and Jamma-converted, but NO MONITOR. Side art was shaped for a MS-Pac cabinet, so would not have fitted his cab (??). Didn’t include a bezel  :-[ but did have a great looking marquee. Also missing a control panel overlay but had a new control panel bracket, pre drilled for a standard happ joy. And a Pac-Man PCB (yes!!) but no daughter cards, so could be just a plain Pac board, or a boot-leg. Extra coin doors and various bits, but NOT a complete kit by any means.  :timebomb:

Still feeling I got a good deal for what parts I was going to use on my cab, I took what I had and headed back. Also picked up an Arkanoid: Revenge of Doh nearby from another CL ad in the same trip. Mostly because it’s in a TRON cabinet, and most of the graphics are preserved under black vinyl. (Can’t wait to get started on that one!)

Full load

Back at the shop tested the 2nd PCB, and this one also did not boot :censored: Again, started the diagnosis process, and this time had success after discovering the board was not supplying the right voltage, and replaced some key power components.

Completed PCB with all add-ons and installed in finished cab

    • What I'm selling / looking for:
Control Panel customization:

Now with a working PCB I turned on to the controls. By now, my wife was pretty excited about the prospect of a MS. Pac cab in the collection and wanted this to be “hers”.  She agreed to have this as a B-day gift, so now I’m tailoring this for her (us) and not as a standard build to be sold off later.

First thing I wanted to change was all the bolts going through the artwork. I wanted to keep this as original, but clean as possible. I JB welded the bracket clips to the underside of the CP after removing some of the paint.

That eliminates 6 bolts right there. Also decided to not use the 4 corner screw holes for the overlay, since the graphic from Phoenix Arcades did not have anything pre-cut except the joystick and button mounts.

This CP looked to be worked on a few times, and maybe even had a couple holes filled/patched in. Repainting would be a tedious process to get it to my standards, so I copied an idea I saw on a Neo-Geo restore here for covering the CP with similarly textured vinyl under the graphics (item listed in parts list at begining of thread). This would make for easier cleaning/upkeep, as well. That will get installed once final assebly is ready.
I knew she liked the pink ball-top joys from other cabinets we saw in some local arcades, so I picked up one from Paradise Arcade, as well as some chrome rim white led buttons. I'm going for a "Little-Ms Pac-Man" look with the controls since I'm a big fan of that build.

The Joystick didn't use the standard Happ mounting holes pre-drilled into the CP. So since this was getting covered by multiple layers of vinyl, I didn't worry about filling them in. I drilled new holes for the JLF mount and used stainless bolts from HomeDepot for the only hardware on the CP.

Cabinet restore:

While sorting out some more custom touches (next post) I started working on the cab. Removed the old brittle t-molding and replaced the old rusted levelers with new chrome and rubber units from Twisted Quarter.
(You may notice the new zinc hardware in the coming pics. I think it's a cheap upgrade that can make a huge difference if doing a full soup-to-nuts-restore. Plus, you're bound to loose some bolts and screws, so now you have a supply ;D )

Started to sand the cab inside and out. As stated previously, the side art had some pretty bad gouges and cuts into it. Wood filler was needed to get a decent surface to start with, so it was either new vinyl art or stenciling. Since I already got the art from the 2nd CL ad, and didn’t have the extra funds/time for stenciling, I went the vinyl route. I did, however, make sure to not sand through the old side art, in case at some point in the future I wanted to come back and re-paint.

From the beginning I knew I wanted to completely paint the interior of the cabinet. I plan to do this for every cabinet in my collection; it just makes a world of difference in cleaning out a +30 year old cab. I will say this, next time I’ll try a brush/roll on white primer first. The wood was just too thirsty for rattle can paint. You’ll save yourself a lot of headache and money going through a bunch of cans and trying to hit certain areas that are much easier with a brush. I did a two-tone black/white for the interior, keeping obvious areas black and the bottom white.

I prefer the PCB / power board area to be white to easily see in low light situations. Also a lot easier finding that screw you just dropped.  :lol For rattle can paint, I found out half-way through “Rust-Oleum Professional High Performance Enamel” (taller 15oz can, silver label) can’t be beat. I was using standard RO before and the ease of application and results were –so- much better. I painted any brackets and mounts black when possible. Gave a nice contrast to the white interior. (Cleaned up power board and monitor shown in the photos, as well)

Applying vinyl has been documented enough already, so here are some finished pics with it applied and the pink t-molding installed:

    • What I'm selling / looking for:
Custom front graphic:

So something bugs me about Ms. Pac cabs: The front of the control panel. Why was it left blank? A bunch of other midway games, including some in the Pac series, have a full graphic from the front of the bracket to the top next to the monitor bezel. Why just a strip of color on the top? Where do those stripes end up?
So I wanted to fix that. I put in a post for some artistic help and SNAAKE answered the call. I provided details of what I was looking for and measurements of the overlay stripes. After some preliminary concepts I edited them a bit to get a rough idea of what I was envisioning:

Sent that back and together this was the end result:

I think the stripes line up nicely, and it looks like it was -meant- to be there, which was the effect I was going for. The font was chosen to match the overlay text for "Move" and "Start Game". Oddly enough, the font I found that matches is called the Terminator font.

You can't un-see it now, can you?

    • What I'm selling / looking for:
NephRing Installation:

So I was directed to the posting of Nephasth’s new product, the NephRing. Thought it would be the perfect finishing touch for the control panel. Worked with Nephasth on choosing the right size and went with the in-line LED controller, since I’d have no other way to easily control the RGB LEDs otherwise in this cab. Was able to be one of the first orders in so a big props to Neph for getting these out so quickly.

This is where my record keeping and photo taking slaked off. Nephasth explains the installation process in great detail on his post - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,132983.0.html. My photos of installation would look very similar to his, maybe the wire-management would not be as neat.  ;)

I simply chose to have my dust washer under the ring for a cool halo effect on the joystick. I purposely went with a pink LED in the ball-top as well, instead of white, so there would be no color interference with the ring. Then you really just need to hot glue the LEDs in place facing the ring. I chose a + pattern rather than at the corners, since I wanted to mount them away from the other mounting holes in the panel, to prevent any light from possibly  bleeding through the graphic overlay.

Wiring was another story all-together. I added a couple pins to the control wire harness plug (it's only using maybe 5 pins of the 9 pin connector anyway) to add 5 volt for the joystick/button LEDs, and 12 volt for the NephRing controller. 5 volts was easy to find in the Ms.Pac cab (there's a 5 volt run going to the coin door, but not for those LEDs). But any attempt to use the 12V lines would not power the LEDs.  :banghead: I was literally tearing through the wire harness until we realized the 12V was AC, and not DC  The fix was splicing in a surge strip into the 120V from the power board, then using a spare 12V power adaptor lying around to power the NephRing.

I only have my GS2 for photos at the moment, so I'll update with a better camera and hopefully some video soon. In short, it looks AMAZING and will be adding these to other projects going forward. I especially like the fading animation option - it cycles though all the possible colors as your playing and gives the cabinet a very nice effect.

Thank you all so much for the kind words. I felt like I had nothing to show for awhile with my X-men project stalled. It feels good to have one under the belt, so to speak.  ;D
Technically it's not 100% (still need to paint the back door and button it up. But I'm very happy with the results.

That turned out great! :applaud:

Thanks man, the ring looks awesome! Just updated the thread with a bunch of pics. They don't do it justice, but it gives people an idea what to expect.

    • What I'm selling / looking for:
G07:

In between the work previously posted, I cleaned the old G07 with the method others recommended: Simple Green, Water, and TIME. It really is that simple. I was really nervous the first time I did this, it was on DK Jr's monitor. But the results are outstanding! I actually did the same for the power board and it turned out great, as well

I didn't even know those labels were in the housing until I sprayed it down! :laugh2:

Coin Door:

This was done using a couple coats of citris-strip with the plate tapped over (I was doing multiple doors at the same time). Mine actually turned out really well, very little sanding required before the hammer-tone paint. Now I tried with just the hammer-tone and with black underneath, and get a dark brown hue when I'm finished either way. It' looks fine to me, just was curious if anyone had a way to get it any darker without applying a coat on top of the hammer-tone.

Misc:
Used Metallic paint to freshen up the light fixture and tested the replacement speaker with no issues. Was nervous a speaker like the one I got would not work directly off the PCB, but it was 'simple' enough to do the job and replaced the old broken paper cone without having to hunt down another of the same vintage.

Yep.  The Rustoleum Hammered Black is definitely tinted away from black.  But it matches OK:

Original newer donor door:

Hammered black with the same coin mechs and hardware installed.  You can see the difference:

No, I didn't see yours and man, your cabinet looks great. I like how you relocated the player one and two buttons to the front of the panel. I was going for a stock looking restore when the wife dropped the bomb this was now her cabinet  :lol, so I added the front graphic mid-way in the resto.
