There's an interesting discussion at KLOV about the pros and cons of this.

its a terrible idea. Gist is they pay me like $60 for some stranger to have my cab for a month, its not their inventory but a network of owners.

I cant imagine the kinda ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- people would do to my cab, like put their bare junk on the Orchid side art of KI2, or worse, put their bare junk on the Spinal side are of KI1.
If you're replying to a troll you are part of the problem.
I also need to follow this advice. Ignore or report, don't reply.

And on top of that they make you deliver and pick up your machine as well as provide repairs for that $60 and most likely provide your own insurance against damages that may occur. I can't imagine anyone wanting to do that with their machine unless it is already ready to be tossed off a roof !! (ie. this thread - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,133696.0.html )

Reading the article they mention snatching up all the cheap cabs on craigslist, I check out the SF craigslist all the time because its not too far for a good deal, it kinda makes me a little peeved to know that the cabs that I could possibly be interested in get a quick and dirty referb and are whored out.

Very few people are interested in such a service and those who are will want A list games. Not craigslist junk. In another article they show the guys loading up a Pac-Man and a Tron. That $90 Street Smart conversion or that C list classic you pick up for $100 would never see a single rental.

Also, a lot of the pros and semi pros never pay much for anything. I have a basement full of dedicated games and the only one I paid more than $100 for was a Pole Position cockpit which I paid $150 for. However, to do that takes constant searching, the ability to act on a deal right then and there and the willingness to take the turds along with the gems. I have a flatbed truck that will hold 8 games with room for a bunch of boxes of parts or spare monitors to go along with them.

Acceptance of Zen philosophy is marred slightly by the nagging thought that if all things are interconnected, then all things must be in some way involved with Pauly Shore.

If I may ask, what do you do for a living?  Are you self employed?

Stay at home father at the moment. Wages have tanked bad in what I was doing previously (building maintenance) and I can't even get an interview doing anything too far separated from that. Thus I haven't been able to find anything that wouldn't actually end up as a net loss in income (day care isn't cheap). For some reason that is a really hard concept for some people to grasp though.

Wife would be home instead of me, but she only has one kidney and has a couple other minor health complications and if one of us has to go without health coverage then I would rather it be me.

Sorry to hear about your troubles.

I only asked because here in California - there are a lot of those "drop everything right now deals" - and I'm always curious who is snagging them up while I'm at work.

And ya, I've got two little ones - daycare is murder.  My wife quit her job to stay home with the kids.

Sounds like you have the time to make bartops and sell them for $100 complete.  I am being serious too.   :)

It sounds like a good deal if you wanted to rent one for a party. As a renter the worst case is your out $60-$75.

Paigeoliver at least you are spending time with you kids.

I sell off the extras from my various pickups. It brings in a little money or at least pays for what I keep. I have a 13 month old though and she needs a lot of attention which keeps me from being able to devote any serious time to anything.

Wow ... that's really tough ... hope something turns up soon - I remember the days of running round after my little girl. No she's 11 and LOVES arcades and pushes me to get my cab done.

Things have a habit of turning out ok...

When I finally finish my cab projects, I would definitely prefer the amount of strange-junk contact be kept to a minimum. Seeing the abuse cabs take in a public space, I shudder to think what goes on behind closed doors.  It puts the lotion on it's skin...

..or it gets the hose again.

Obviously there will be some sort of insurance and maybe a home interview before location.  But we are not talking dot or star trek cabs where fires can start quickly.

Most of these locations are game rooms.

Besides it wasn't that long ago when cigarette burns was a mark of authenticity.    ;D

The games are really more likely to be damaged during the move in and move out then they are during the rental period.

Actually, as a renter you commit to a month's rental. See the KLOV thread for more details.
