"1943: Tiny Pilot" - A 2/3 Scale Upright Jamma Cabinet
Keep the 30" - 48" high people in your home happy

Woodshop Flunky's 'American Ace' was one of the main projects that inspired me enough to actually pick up a jigsaw and start to build my first ever cabinet. The theme, form factor and detail of documentation that went into the project was everything I needed to say 'Hey, I think I can actually do this!!!'. So a huge thanks to Woodshop Flunky for sharing such a great project with us all, I hope you like this one buddy!!!

The 2/3 scale cabinets are such a fun build, and something that pretty much anyone can pull off as they are less cramped than trying to work with a bar top but not so big that they get difficult to to deal with. For this build I wanted to create a simple kit that anyone could just download and bang out themselves in a weekend or two.

I've attached a full-size PDF cut file to the end of this post with all the measurements and templates for the cabinet. You can either use it as a basic measurements guide, or take it to your local FedEx/Kinkos/Staples and have it printed out full size for actual templates. I've also included an art pack of the marquee, bezel, control panel, front kick panel and sides that I'm going to be using in this particular build which will be based around a single stick, two button control panel and a vertical 17" 4:3 LCD monitor.

So if you've got some spare time, parts and a few pieces of wood hanging around, have a bash at this one.

- MDF Construction
- Custom designed artwork for Sides, CP and Kick
- Gun Metal Gray Anodized Aluminum Dust Washer & yellow bubbletop
- X-Arcade Cyclops coin door
- Audio amp with controls inside coin door
- 17" LCD with in-line Craftymech SLG
- Jamma wiring
- Raised base with Nintendo style rear rollers

Materials
The build is based around 5 sheets of 24"x49" wood of your choice.

Just a tip -- it's quite a bit cheaper to buy a single 49x97 inch panel and have them make the 3 cuts to cut it into 4 24x49 inch panels (usually 2 free cuts and 1 @ less than 25 cents) -- ie. 3\4 inch 24x49 MDF @ home depot is $13.97 while 3\4 inch 49x97 inch MDF is $34.12 saving over $21.00 -- Or just buy 2 panels for the same cost as the 5 smaller panels ($68.24 (2x$34.12) vs. $69.85 (5x$13.97))  and get 3 extra panels for mistakes or the next project !!

Off we go then.

Everything is based around the standard size 24"x49" MDF panels you can get from Home Depot or Lowes for about $10 a piece. You need 5 in total.

I'm making my sides out of 3/4"
My kickplate/base/etc board 3/4"
Everything else out of 1/2"

I didn't bother printing the templates, I just used the measurements and penciled it out onto the wood. I clamped the two pieces of 3/4" MDF together and cut both sides in one go with my jigsaw.

Fired round them both with the slot cutter. On scratch builds I like to put t-molding around the whole perimeter.

After 1 hour of pencil and cutting I had about 80% of the boards done

Next day, another 45 mins to cut the remaining panels, pencil in and cut all the holes for speakers. power plugs, monitor etc.

Start to dry fit the various hardware

4" long 3/4" square blocking, just mash out about 34 or so of these on the table saw. I then penciled in the guidelines for the blocking on both sides of the wood

Another 45 mins to screw and glue all the blocking in place and we are almost ready for a dry-fit assembly

I'd like to ask where you got that 6" x 9" speaker cover from...  I've been toying with creating my own 'original' ones for the Doom cab, but these actually fit the design really, really well. I looked them up, but couldn't find anyone who's selling them into my area for a fair price.

That's actually a vent I had knocking around from some random cab, it's going on the top rear angled panel.

Man I wish I did.  :o I only work about 1 hour at a time though on my projects, it's amazing what you can do in an hour if you stay focused and stick to your plan.

Rick: Sorry I don't even remember where that one came from, I think I got it from a moldy old Heavy Barrel conversion cab which was originally a Ms. Pac-Man, so I guess if you try and find vents from one of those cabs that would be the right one.

Thanks! I actually just checked, and I DO have that site bookmarked. The challenge is, for two of them costing a very nice $18, the shipping is actually $23 to Canada. So, I CAN order them, but I'll be sure to have a bigger order ready to go, before I do!

Thanks though! I completely forgot I should have already knew that.

The Ikari cab is all but done, just got a bit of soldering to do on the rotary board and I'm good to go, got a Time Soldiers board inbound from Vigo for that which will take it to 3 games. Not sure what I'll pop in for #4, I think maybe SAR.

Star Wars & the Amplifone build are based on an inifinite timeline right now.

Alchemy VPin continues to haunt my brain with various creative challenges, so until I solve them in my head there's not much point in standing and staring at it in the garage.

I'm hoping to finish this cabinet in under 10 total build hours, that's my personal challenge on this one.

No problem -- I just noticed the price difference while building my bartop with 1\2 inch MDF needed 2 of the 24x48 inch panels for the build and they wanted $10.95 per piece, was about to buy them when I noticed the 49x97 inch panel was only $26.42 so for only $4.50 extra I got enough MDF for 2 builds just by spending a few minutes getting someone to make 3 cuts on their saw.

I love me some 1943, and have thought about building a full-size replica before, so I'm going to be keeping an eye on this project!

I forgot to ask, will this be a dedicated cab for 1943?

Thanks for providing the plans, I might have to put this can on my project short list. I'm looking for an alternative to a Candy Cab for a Shmups project, and a replica 1943 in a smaller form factor that I could play seated would be all kinds of awesome!

Heading off to sneaky London at the end of September actually. Will be posting some build pictures of the cabs that helped to make it possible.

On your mini cabinet;

I freaking love it, if I didn't already know its size I would think it was a large cabinet. The mini ones are very gratifying in a way that full sizes aren't....."they are just so damned cute"......as my lady would say.

Paint on and marquee light in

Keeping everything tight and clean on the power/cpu mounting board

All mounted in the cab and powered up. Still needs cable clean up

Volume controls just inside the coin door. Easy access but also good to keep little fingers off the volume dial

So far I'm at 7 hrs total work on the project

I'm still waiting on other parts too Aaron including the artwork so this will grind to a halt soon until they arrive.

 Figured I'd post this

Before I did this

I had enough left to do this cab but the vinyl is too cheap to use on a seller cab. It looks great and I don't mind it on the Ikari cab as I know i will be careful with it. But the tack and durability of this stuff is awful so rather than produce something low grade I trashed it.

Thinking I may go for a flat army green or dusty naval blue/grey.

Since you are going for a 1943 (plane) theme I would use the dirty blue/naval color.  If you could pull it off also I would try to emulate the artwork that W. Flunky had on the side of his weecade.  Otherwise looks good as usual.

So you're not planning to keep this?

Originally it was a 'throw together a seller with all the bits I have laying around' but of course you never know how you are going to feel about it when it's finished. And then again you don't know how you'll feel about it after it's been sitting in your house for two months and your hobby account is looking pretty low  ::)

If you could pull it off also I would try to emulate the artwork that W. Flunky had on the side of his weecade.

I thought about this a lot on the way into work this morning and think that something along these lines will be the best way to go. Once again a project has evolved from a quick 'burner' into something that I'm really happy with, so a little more attention than my first idea may be in order.

So, the idea is full printed side art that incorporates the original 1943 artwork along with some weathered blue/gray and rivets. As I said at the beginning Woodshop Flunky's American Ace is a huge influence on this build so I don't think using a similar style of side-art and kick plate treatment would be inappropriate.

Also, for some extra fun I'm going to do the black/yellow hazard stripes across the coin door and if i'm really feeling brave will try and make the same striping on the T-Molding too.

Well, here we go again, this project just turned into a labor-of-love.  :P

So you're not planning to keep this?

Originally it was a 'throw together a seller with all the bits I have laying around' but of course you never know how you are going to feel about it when it's finished.

I hear you, brother. When I've worked on projects for people in the past, part of me always wishes I could keep it for myself, as the accumulated knowledge with each project makes each cab just that much better.

Just an opinion, but I wouldn't add the 1943 side art over the full-size design. It starts to look too busy. The full-size design looks fine without the added game art.

+1  I would reccommend doing some smaller stencil lettering that said "NO STEP", "DO NOT WALK ON THIS AREA", or even serial numbers.  The 1943 decal takes away from the sideart.

I like the decal on the side but it should be more faded, scuffed, and look more painted on than stuck on.  Rather than on top of the panels it should be part of the panels if you're going to keep it.  Just a thought.

The idea was to try and go for a faded battered look, like it had just been pasted on there haphazardly, but I need to get hi-res versions of the art first, the mock up is just using some lo-res at the moment.

I dunno, American Ace pulled off the "plane" look without side art rather successfully, but then again, his wasn't themed to a particular game. Maybe that's where the disconnect lies.

If you are going to keep the art, I would "tilt" the right side away from the front so it looks like the left.

Yep the poster/side-art continues the branded theme of the cab, rather than making more 'genericy plane theme' which I tend to stay away from when i can help it. It may all come down to the issue of whether or not GoG feel comfortable sending me a copy of their vector art.

Joel,  If you are still looking to spruce up the side of the cabinet you could also try to incorporate shark nose art like they did on dis plane.  Just an idea.

Yeah I may be adding lettering, but not taking away the poster. I've never agreed with the less-busy design preference myself, personally I think it is ill suited to the genre we are working in. Not to say that there aren't some fantastic minimalist cabinets, for example Echo Base is one of my favorite designs on the site. But for me personally that's not what I'm trying to do with my designs, I'm creating cabs that have large visual impact and wow appeal.

Barrel of Kong was my most low key design, and even in that one people were saying I shouldn't have put art on the Control panels, that the bezel should have been plain etc etc, but that's just not my bag baby.

Tiny Pilot reminds me of a joke:

One day a man walks into a bar and to his amazement, he finds a tiny person playing a tiny piano. Stunned the man asked the bartender where he got the person. The bartender replied that if you go into the closet there is a genie that will grant one wish.

The man dashed into the the closet and as the bartender said there was a genie, and lo and behold, he was right!  So, the man wished for one million bucks, but instead, got one million ducks. Infuriated the man stormed to the bartender and screamed, "I asked your ---smurfing--- genie for one million bucks but i got one million DUCKS!!! What gives?!"

"No ---steaming pile of meadow muffin---!" replied the bartender. "Do you really think I asked for a 12 inch PIANIST?!"

Ok I tried the lettering with some phrases like 'No Step' and 'My milkshake brings all the boys to the park' but I just couldn't get it to look right, so with that said I'm calling these designs a wrap and firing them off to Scott.

ohhh ok.... (thread jackers)

There once was this 10 year old boy called Mike who lived on his father's farm and he was the biggest joy was tractors. He loved them. He adored them. In fact, without any exaggeration, they were his meaning for living. His roomed was decorated with tractor posters, he made tractor models and he took the greatest of joy in washing his father's tractors.

One day he came home from school and his father announced that he had decided it was time to buy a new tractor for the farm, and that consequently he would be going to the National Exhibition Center in Birmingham that weekend to pick one out. At this Mike went into tractor overdrive and started to beg his father to take him with him. Eventually his father relented and said "OK, you can come, but only if you finish all your homework and chores for the weekend on Friday night.

Friday night came round and little Mike rushed home from school and sat down to his homework. 30 minutes later (well he was only 10) he was at the kitchen sink doing the washing up and then it was out into the farmyard to wash the tractor. As he rubbed away he thought to himself "this is the last time I do this one, we'll have a new one next week". By 8 o'clock he was finished and it was time for his bath and then to bed.

Saturday morning, 7 o'clock. Mike jumped out of bed and ran downstairs and out to the yard where his father was getting the car ready. Having remembered that he had no clothes on, he ran back into the house, up to his room , got dressed and then ran back down again. Mike's father rebuked him, saying "You're having breakfast before you go" . So after breakfast it was into the car and off to the NEC.

All the way there Mike was looking out of the car window, trying to spot as many type of tractor as he could, much to his father's annoyance. "Will you be still for 1 hour?" A shrimp stood a better chance of surviving in a supernova. Eventually they arrived at the NEC and Mike's dad parked the car.

"Can I have a look around on my own" pleaded Mike. "You must be joking " retorted his father. However, as is the way with small children and some parents, one major tantrum later Mike was wandering around the NEC while his father picked out a new tractor.

The first stand that Mike came to was British and it had a wonderful big red tractor on it. Mike let out a little squeak of joy and jumped in the cab. There were all the usual knobs and dials, but in addition there was a stereo radio cassette. Now to Mike this was a major improvement on the tractor on his father's farm and for several minutes he was having great fun. Then the salesman arrived. "So what do you think of this model, Sir?" Well Mike was well enamored and communicated this to the salesman in no uncertain terms. "Would you like to purchase this model Sir?" Mike thought about this and said "well I only get $2 pocket money per week will that cover it mister?" The salesman gainfully fought off a heart attack and screamed "Get out of my tractor you little %*&$@#&%" which naturally upset Mike a little bit. However he quickly recovered and headed for the next stand.

The next stand that Mike came to was German and it had a wonderful big yellow tractor on it. Mike let out a slightly louder squeak of joy and jumped in the cab. There were the same knobs and dials and stereo radio cassette, but also wash wipers on all the windows and a CD player attached to the radio cassette. Now to Mike this was a major improvement on the British tractor and for several minutes he was having great fun. Then the salesman arrived. "So what do you think of this model, Sir?" Well Mike was greatly impressed and communicated this to the salesman in no uncertain terms. "Would you like to purchase this model Sir?" Mike thought about this and said "well I only get £2 pocket money per week will that cover it mister?" The salesman gainfully fought off a heart attack and a stroke and screamed "Get out of my tractor you little %*&$@#&%" which naturally upset Mike again. However he recovered and headed for the next stand.

The next stand that Mike came to was American and it had a wonderful big blue tractor on it. Mike let out a loud scream of joy and jumped in the cab. There were the same knobs and dials, stereo radio cassette with CD and wash wipers on all the windows, but in this tractor there was also a microwave oven and a small TV. Now to Mike this was a major improvement on the German tractor and for 25 minutes he had a wonderful time. Then the salesman arrived. "So what do you think of this model, Sir?" Well Mike was gob-smacked for a moment from the enormity of his joy, but he eventually communicated his joy to the salesman. "Would you like to purchase this model Sir?" Mike thought hard about his answer this time and then said "well I only get £2 pocket money per week will that cover it mister?" The salesman swallowed what must have been 2 gallons of phlegm and screamed "Get out of my tractor you little %*&$@#&%" which naturally upset Mike greatly. However he recovered with some difficulty and headed for the next stand.

The next stand that Mike came to was Japanese and it had a wonderful, enormous, golden tractor on it. Mike let out a very loud scream of joy which shattered several wine glasses in the near vicinity and jumped into the cab in a single bound. There were the same knobs and dials, stereo radio cassette with CD, wash wipers on all the windows and microwave oven, but this tractor had a widescreen TV with Nicam stereo sound and a small car attached to the back to take you home after a hard day in the fields. Now to Mike this was without doubt the most stupendous tractor he had ever seen and for a whole hour he played all over it. Eventually the salesman arrived. "So what do you think of this model, Sir?" Well Mike was naturally a little cautious about answering this question in light of what had happened so far and merely commented that it was "nice". The salesman realized that he was up against a hard dealer and asked "Would you like to purchase this model Sir?" Mike thought very hard about his answer this time and then said "well I only get £2 pocket money per week will that cover it mister?" The salesman leaped at Mike, dragged him from the cab and threw him of the stand screaming "Get out of here you little %*&$@#&%".

Now this time Mike was very upset. He ran around the NEC trying to find his father. When he did find him he ran up and was crying so much that his father decided they should go home. All the way home Mike lay on the back seat sniffling, not even bothering to look out of the window. When the car stopped in the farmyard Mike leaped from the car and ran upstairs to his bedroom. Pulling all the posters off the wall and collecting up all his models he ran back downstairs and out into the yard. Piling them all in the yard he set light to them. His parents just stood and watched. Then Mike announced "I'm off down to the pub" Now his parents realized that he wouldn't get into any trouble and let him go.

When Mike walked in to the pub he strolled nonchalantly up to the bar and asked for a pint of beer. Now this surprised the barman as not many 10 year old boys came in, but he gave him a pint of cold tea, knowing that Mike would never know the difference. As Mike sipped his "beer" he glanced around the bar and noticed how smoky it was. Commenting on this, the barman replied that "the chimney blows back a bit and a lot of the customers smoke. Mike contemplated on this and then announced "I can get rid of all this smoke for you". The barman just laughed and said "go on then!".

Mike took a big breath, sucking in all the smoke, and walked outside where he exhaled it. Walking back into the bar, the barman muttered "how the $%&£*~@# did you do that?"

"Oh it was easy - you see, I'm an ex-tractor fan."

Artwork pack updated and available for download at the end of the OP.

I've sent all the artwork to Scott over at GoG now, so I'll have to wait for all of that to be finished before moving on.

I'm seriously considering replacing the Jamma board in this with the Android project that Degen has been working on, I've got all the hardware for it and it will allow me to do way more then the usual mix of 60 classics with better emulation. I'll have to have a good look at it and see if I can get it to do exactly what I want for this.

Another awesome build, Joel.  So how'd you do the wrinkled and torn look for the poster art?

Also trying to figure out whether the metalwork is snagged from the image of a wing or vertical stabilizer?  Regardless, it's a really nice job of combining different elements and making them look cohesive.  Your long experience as a creative director continues to serve you well.  :)

Thanks man. The wrinkled paper and peeling was done in Filterforge and the metal areas were made from a few different shots of plane metalwork that I put together in PShop and did a bunch of color work on to bring them together.

Joel,

Where did you get your high res photos from to make your artwork?

From a free stock photo web site, can't remember what it was called now, I think something like RGBStock ??

Moved the mounting board to the other side of the cab for better cable management

Everything is finished and working now including coin door lights and wiring. I just have to wait for my art to arrive then I can drill the control panel and put everything together.

So far its taken 9 build hours to get this far.

Did you ask Rich at this old game? Awesome build!

A pirate walks into a bar with a peg leg, a hook for a hand, an eyepatch, a parrot on his shoulder and a steering wheel on his crotch. The bartender looked up and asked him "Excuse me sir, do you know you have a steering wheel on your crotch?" To which the pirate replied "Argh I know, it's drivin me nuts!"

Nice plate -- other than the fact that the frequency, wattage and amperage are all wrong.   >:D

60 Hz on this side of the pond.

If you go with 7.85A, that gives you 942W or plug in whatever value you want for amperage or wattage and solve for the other.  (120V * 7.85A = 942W)

I hear ya.  We're working non-stop to meet a release deadline for the 19th of sept.  I'm usually up working until midnight or so every night.  After that, I'm going to start building again.

Man is there anything you cant do? I looked through this forum and all I see is your amazing builds. Snagging the templates and art for this one as a project someday. One question though.. do you always use the Lepai amps? If so hows the quality of them?

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy the builds.

I use that AMP for my basic builds as it's cheap ($20 delivered with Amazon Prime), easy to wire up and does a decent enough job. I first used it in Little Ms. Pac-Man hand have just stuck with it as it does the job.

Yeah I like it a lot but it's not a keeper for me, it's too big for my little girl and not the right theme for her (I'm thinking about a pink DK mini) so I'll let it go if someone comes up with the right price. I'm very happy with the way it came out, I feel that it's my best proportioned and themed design to date.

Just stumbled onto your build!  Outstanding work (of course!).

I love the mini cabs and 1942 was such an awesome game.

Your "re-theme", using some of the orginal art mixed with your new stuff, is brilliant. :)

Using your plans for my first build.  Kids are digging it big time.  I will probably do different art though.  One question...it looks like it sits on the square base on the bottom of the baseboard.  Is this correct?  If so what size wood and what size wheels did you use?
