Help configuring RAM Star Wars Yoke USB Adaptor
« on: July 20, 2013, 08:03:54 pm »
Hi,

Anyone able to help me trying to set-up a RAM controls USB Star Wars Yoke adapter?

I have it all set-up and configured using the windows Yoke config. In the windows yoke config test screen (displayed once your have configured it by turning it circles) it seems to work perfectly. But when I run it with Star Wars on Mame, whilst the Y-Axis seems pretty much spot on, the X-Axis doesn't start to register until I turn the controller quite a bit to the left or right. I have tried playing with the Mame settings X Digital Speed and X sensitivity but these don't appear to make any difference.

I have a ROTJ upright and it works fine with this - so it looks like the pots are ok. I've actually got two Yokes and two USB adapters and the same thing happens with all of them. I have even tried running mame on windows XP and windows 7 in case the drivers differ. No joy.  :banghead:

Somehow I want Mame to register very small movement left and right...

Any suggestions?

PS I know as soon as RAM controls is mentioned a lot of people have an irresistible urge to flame - but there are other threads for you to get that off your chest - let's try to keep this thread on topic  ;D

Thanks in advance...

I'm pretty sure when SW starts, it needs an additional moment to calibrate the yoke by doing exactly what you are v doing. I think you're fine.

Star Wars will auto calibrate, if you turn the yoke to its furthest positions a few times.

Being that you may have altered the defaults, you may want to delete the ini / config / nvram  files that mame creates.  Also, Sometimes old config files do not play nice with the newer versions of mame.

Finally, you may want to change it so there is little or no deadzone.   Deadzone may help pc controllers deal with center-drift issues.. but with an original arcade controller... that might not be needed or desired.

Thanks - I tried the calibration in star wars (turning the yoke at the start up screen) and that def helps with the general play, but it still takes quite a big shift to the left or right before it registers.

I have deleted all configs and ini files... Didn't try the NVRAM files - I will take a look at these later.

Of note, it affects all games. So, Chase HQ, Space Harrier + others. I know the interface wasn't deigned for these games, but exactly the same thing is happening - I have to move the yoke quite a distance on the x axis before the games register the movement.

A good example to see how bad it is, is Space Invaders (which only uses left and right). You really have to move the yoke quite a bit to the left and right before your laser canon moves.

I haven't played around with the deadzone - can you tell me how could I change that??

Thanks....

Found the Deadzone setting - I have never noticed that before!

For some reason I couldn't change it in the Mame GUI UI (it was greyed out and not editable) - I had to amend it in the Mame starwars ini file. I knocked it down from .3 to 0.05 and initial report is.... it only bl**dy works!

Yee haw - my first game of star wars using an original Yoke!!!

Many thanks for the tip - I can go to bed happy now. Very happy :applaud:  :applaud:  :applaud:

I had the same issue you had,  turn down the Joystick Deadzone.  Mine's at 0.05,  and is very responsive.  I'm using QMC2,  so it lets me specify the value per game.  It takes a very large jump to have a noticeable effect,  the default is 0.5 IIRC.

Edit:  Oops,  nevermind,  that'll teach me not to read every post carefully!

Thanks for the reply Gatt - your advice would have been spot on...
