wall mountable marquee light box
« on: July 18, 2013, 01:37:42 pm »
Anyone know if they sell mountable marquee light boxes.  Basically just a rectangle with a light in it, that I can put my marquee.

I just finished my pedestal so all I need to do now is mount the lcd tv and speakers with the marquee above it all.

I'm sure i'll just end up making one myself, doesn't seem too hard, and I have a router to make small inlets for the plexi and marquee to fit into.

I made this one for my wall. I intended on adding flashing lights for explosions and machine gun fire, but have not gotten there yet. If I do it again, I will make the sides deeper.

A router with a slotting bit (like the one used for T-Molding) will work if the bit is sized a bit bigger than the plexi, or if you make multiple passes to get the right thickness.

In my opinion, it is easier on the table saw. Cut a slot, and then adjust the fence slightly to make the slot big enough for the plexiglass.

Yea that looks nice, how would you get lights in there though.  It looks tight.   I just want mine to be completely lit up.  Do they sell small white lights I can string in there.  Pretty much like Christmas lights.

These are made specially for marquees GGG Nova Matrix Linx

Or you can use strips of LEDs that run on 12V that are usually ordered from DX.com or eBay.

Yes, it is too thin for a fully lit display. If I make another it will be deeper. I did get some lights to see how it would look, but they were too close to the plexi for even distribution of light.

I would get the lights and then experiment with cardboard to see how deep the sides need to be before cutting your wood.

It is not too thin for proper lighting.  I used the nova matrix leds in a very thin marquee display with the leds mounted at the top and the inside of the box covered with foil to reflect the light.
