4-player games on 2-player cabinet?
« on: November 14, 2003, 01:46:15 pm »
If I build a 2-player cabinet and want to play a 4-player game (ie gauntlet, mortal kombat, etc), will there be any problems?  I'd think you would just have 2 player stats that would always say 'insert coin'.

Thanks for any info!

If I understand correctly, the question is "Can I play 4-player games, if my cabinet is only set up for 2-player games".

The answer is Yes, except you might be limited to only the first two players.  I can't think of a specific example, so I'll make stuff up :-)))

Let's say Zorgon is a 4-player game  -  It uses the credits to determine what player you will be -

Player 1 - Clyde - the red warrior
Player 2 - Pinky - the pink warrior
Player 3 - Shazaam - the blue warrior
Player 4 - Hawk - the yellow warrior

If you can't input coins for Player 3 or Player 4, you can only be Pinky or Clyde, never Shazaam or Hawk.

However, search MAME and there is probably a clone called "Zorgon (2 players)" which will probably let you move the joystick to select any of the four players after putting a coin in slot 1.

A specific example is TMNT, though not only do you have to input  coins in slot 3 you would also have to use joystick 3 to play. There is a 2 player clone though that lets you select what character you want to play regardless of joystick.

An example of a 4 player that their is no 2 player version that I am aware of is Simpsons.

The japanese version is 2 player and as far as I know it is almost exactly the same as the 4 player version.
